Hi all, I finally got my R-pi running today, using a 16GB (class 10) SDHC card (debian). Sound is non-existent by default, so lots of stuff has to be downloaded for alsa, pulseaudio et al. Don't bother with 2GB cards. A vintage version of Audacity is also available via "apt-get". And having installed all the above, it recognises my class-compliant USB stereo soundcard, and audio plays cleanly. gcc and python are available of course, and, as of 1 minute ago, Csound 5.12. So all those teachers pondering what to teach on those new-fangled computing courses really have no excuses! Not tried yet is Midi support; need to find a powered usb hub to plug all the stuff into. RIP the summer solstice - the days get shorter (but probably just as wet) from now on :-(. Richard Dobson |

I checked Farnell Finland , but they're taking only preorders. Everything started, when I found a really old NetcardPC. It's a Pentium mmx 233 MHz small one card computer. I had Linux running from 64M CF-card. (in the early 2000, a bigger CF would have cost too much). I powered it up, and kust got heavy smoke :-( One capasitor blew out in the switching power. Replaced it but no luck, then I found an old ATX PSU with correct voltages, but still doesn't run. I suspect that the PWRGOOD pin in the CPU doesn't set. But without any documents, it's really hard to find it. I have also a few years old Blackfin BF537-EZKIT and it runs Linux nicely. Bad thing is, that on that card audio isn't supported. There is some info getting sound out using other type of DAC driver, but I haven't get it to work. In bare metal sounds work just fine. Also got last Thursday Arduino and been reading how to get it to talk to csound. Processing seems to make things very easy . But now on my desk are really too many cables :-) Happy midsummer. -matti |
