[Csnd] SoundCloud issues

Hi all, I was considering adding a Soundcloud link to the csound.sourceforge.net, so I've been browsing the Csound group on Soundcloud. It's been a miserable experience, though -- full of ui quirks, gateway timeouts, and poor download speeds in general. Do other people have the same issues? Is Soundcloud just having a bad day or do these kinds of issues occur frequently? I'd like to link the csound.sourceforge.net site to the SoundCloud group because the recordings are good when they play correctly. The SoundCloud issues sour the experience, though. I'd appreciate it if people would browse the SoundCloud site at http://soundcloud.com/groups/csound -- then cast a vote for linking to it, or not. If it works well enough for others, I'll feel more confident linking it from the csound.sourceforge.net site. I vote against it. Let's have a non-flaky public face. Regards, Mike On Fri, Jan 21, 2011 at 11:34 AM, andy fillebrown |

Is it better than nothing? Those are pretty much the options a.t.m. SoundCloud or nothing, unless there is another site I'm not aware of. Cheers, ~ andy.f On Fri, Jan 21, 2011 at 11:52 AM, Michael Gogins |

I've never had any problems with sound cloud. Personally I think it's a good idea. Rory. On 21 January 2011 16:52, Michael Gogins |

In fact we should contact archive.org to setup a channel on there specifically for csounders. On Fri, Jan 21, 2011 at 9:25 AM, Brian Redfern |

I'm leaning towards linking it, too. I tried it out from Ubuntu and it seemed to work fine. It's probably just having a hard time with the added security measures on the Window's browsers (cue comment from Victor ... =) ~ andy.f On Fri, Jan 21, 2011 at 12:08 PM, Rory Walsh |

Hi Brian, Archive.org is ok, but it's not as good as SoundCloud from a community perspective, imo. I think the SoundCloud group will attract more users that share aesthetic appreciations with the current user base. Don't let my opinion stop you if it's what you want to do, though. The more the merrier! Cheers, ~ andy.f On Fri, Jan 21, 2011 at 12:25 PM, Brian Redfern |

Soundcloud limits streaming audio to 128mbps. Given the high quality (and sometimes the low amplitude) of many Csound pieces, this is a problem. You can upload 256mbps files and allow visitors to do a file download, and they'll have a much better experience of the music. I would recommend this strategy for Csounders. --JA |

Yeah archive.org I believe supports flac files for very high quality download. On Jan 21, 2011 5:10 PM, "Jim Aikin" <midiguru23@sbcglobal.net> wrote:

Just my 2 cents on the soundcloud question. I've never had any problemsl with soundcloud (even on windows :-), and I find it to be a thriving community that works for getting to know musicians and composers that I would otherwise not become aware of. Besides, the links to tuneCore might boost a connection between noncommercial and commercial musical activities. I'm all for it. And would suggest uploading in 96/24, why bother uploading in mp3 at all, come to think about it? Oeyvind 2011/1/22 Brian Redfern |

no, please. they would certainly give him the job of jobs if he applied, but we want to have him here. except he can change apple to become the leading company for open source standards ... @Oeyvind: If you upload to Soundcloud in 96/24, their software will convert it to 128mbps mp3 before it appears on the site. You can allow downloading, which will indeed let people download your unaltered 96/24 file, but that will be rather slow due to the file size, and some people won't bother, so an intermediate format might be preferable. Also, I believe Soundcloud has a ceiling on the amount of storage space you get with a free account, which you'll be using up quickly. --JA |

IMO, the best option is to upload FLAC at either 44/16 or 96/24. - Dave On 1/22/2011 11:43 AM, Jim Aikin wrote: > > @Oeyvind: If you upload to Soundcloud in 96/24, their software will convert > it to 128mbps mp3 before it appears on the site. Yes, all correct, it's just, if your material justifies the 96/24 resolution it's nice to take advantage of the best format for downloading. For some pieces, CD quality would be sufficient too. For clarity, soundcloud accounts have a limit on the number of minutes you can store, but does not limit file size or total storage space. Oeyvind 2011/1/22 Jim Aikin |

Thank you for the responses. I'll add a link to the Csound SoundCloud group. If something better comes along, please let me know. It has been my intention to put together a separate "Music Links" page for a while, but I can never seem to find the time. I do have a decent set of links noted, though. If anybody has additional links to music made with Csound, feel free to send them to me. I may get around to making the page, eventually.
