[Csnd] Xenakis etc

In my musical youth I was a regular attender at symphony concerts
(Bournemouth Symphony Orcestra -- Constantin Silvestri) and enjoyed many
pieces., Only two cpnposers had the "distinction" of my falling asleep
during a concert while playinf their pieces;one English amd one German.wrt
to the later I really cannot see the point of his maundering depression,
but otrhers seem to think he is the pinicle. Strangely.my musocal hero,
Iannis Xenakis who I only met twice and got him an honori]ly Doctorate,
though he was the fount of music.
Any suggestin sas who these two were?
Aesthetics are so individual...

OK I didn't know he was Austrian, in fact I don't know much about him and have always felt guilty for not giving his music some time. P On 5 January 2011 09:07, |

I guess if Xenakis liked him then he can't have been one of the romantics. I remember reading the interview with him and when asked about Berg he said something like "his violin concerto is OK but he's a romantic chap". Dying to know! I can only hope that it's not Britten and Stockhausen (I know I know he wasn't German, he was from Sirius). P On 5 January 2011 13:44, peiman khosravi |

According to Roger Woodward, his favourite composer was Brahms! I'll
see if I can gig out the interview and post it somewhere. It was on
BBC R3, before the UK première of Keqrops, so it's on a twenty-odd
year old cassette somewhere. No promises about the audio quality (IF
I can find it!)
Still remember listening to that concert, from the 1987(?) Proms:
Stravinsky - Agon
Xenakis - Keqrops
Stockhausen - Spiel
Birtwistle - The Triumph of Time
Those were the days…
At the moment, they're inflicting 13 days of Mozart - ONLY Mozart! -
on us.

I heard Xenakis say that he was a follower of Brahms, at the Delph Music
Conference and festival in July 1992.

Well, I like most of Mozart (though I don't like some of the ways he is
performed) - the only real downside of this exercise for me is that I
can't play "guess the composer". I only hope they do a similar feature
on Haydn sometime, cos he wos better!

One composer? 24 hours a day?? For 13 days???
How long before it just becomes aural wallpaper?
Can't say I'm a big fan of these single-composer fests that the
powers that be on R3 seem to think are such a good idea. Context and
contrast are important elements in any programming decisions, don't
you think?
With you on Haydn, BTW! Though NOT like this, please…

Re Haydn -- I've long felt this but haven't heard anyone
say it. (He and Bartok were my favorites for awhile.)

| I love both Mozart and Haydn -- Mozart for his manic/depressive emotional depth (there are clouds of sadness even in his sunniest pieces---for me the eidos of this is the A major piano concerto, K.488) and Haydn for his proto Beethoven earthy gruffness and humor. Mozart reigns supreme in his piano concerti, the late symphonies, and operatic masterpieces. Haydn's symphonies and string quartets are all top notch, even the early ones. It's not an eiher/or proposition for me! Nor is it -- either/or -- for me. That degree of preference would be absurd. And of course I love both - the main aspect of chamber orchestra
playing I really miss. I actually find the current Mozart fest on R3
very interesting, not simply playing the famous masterworks but all the
other twiddly bits we otherwise never know about much less hear. And the
fact it transmits 24/7 does not mean you have to listen 24/7! Plenty of
context and comparison there; just a little more subtle than the usuual
Juke-Box character of R3. I do miss "Late Junction" though!
