I'm sorry there's no consensus on this.

Double-precision is, in a few applications, audibly more precise (double 
blind tests).

Single-precision is, however, somewhat (15%?) faster in real-time 
performance.

As a composer, I use double-precision.

Most performers seem to use single-precision.
