| I've read through the Celemony web pages on DNA.
It seems they say the software can parse out notes from limited polyphony. They are not claiming to transcribe Wagner or, as I said below, even a wind quintet. It looks to me like it is more along the lines of unraveling several voices of related instruments playing at the same time, like guitar strings or a string quartet. This of course is easier because the unraveling is probably more along the lines of just translating stacks of partials till they coincide, then the translations inverted are the notes.
Much music is made by assembling many tracks each of which has one or a few voices on it. If DNA works as advertised, you would be able to reharmonize a guitar solo or a small vocal ensemble recording. So I still think this is a pretty big deal.
I wonder how slow the polyphony has to be for this to work well, and how many voices it can handle.
Regards,
Mike
