Subject[Csnd] lemur + csound
Hi every1,

A while back, I mentioned on the list that I was gonna buy a Pacarana and
report back. Well, I bought a lemur instead. I just couldn't resist the
temporary price drop ($1800 US). Here's a short review.

The best part about the lemur is that chicks dig it ;) On a more serious
note, the best part is the ability to create your own layouts. I've only
had it a week now, and I've already built a ton of them (including a custom
Logic MCU, yay!). The JazzEditor (used to create layouts) is very easy
to use and u can build while you test. The worst part is the inability to
control it blindly. I mean, you can touch a control and look away, but you
need to look before you touch. I guess with practice, this won't be a
problem.  Still, I'm not going to sell my mpd24 or keyboards;
the lemur doesn't have velocity sensitivity or physical feedback.

I'm connecting the lemur to Csound via Max and csound~. It's definitely
fun to use, and I'm already getting interesting results. My favorite object
at the moment is the pad (basically just a button) because I'm currently
experimenting with chords (I won't be buying a monome anytime soon).
My second favorite is the multiball with no friction; just set them in
motion
and listen to the evolution. Now, if I could just stop trying to build new
instruments and use the ones I already have, I can focus on music ;)
Any1 else have a lemur?

I have a Lemur too, I find it very useful and flexible.
I've been using it for almost two years, and I'm still very happy with it.
Haven't used it for rhythmic trigging so I don't know about the
latency (I think it might be a little slow?).

I have some ImproSculpt Lemur presets if anyone needs'em ... ;-)

That's comforting to hear. I get the feeling that the lemur is a good
investment.

I have noticed some latency (not sure what conditions affect latency).
But, I'm used to dealing with latency in all the apps I use, so I'm not
too worried. I'm working on a setup that quantizes discrete events
(OSC, MIDI, score events) to rhythmic divisions in realtime. That
alleviates some of the timing sloppiness when working with a beat.

One thing that bothers me is the imprecise nature of the finger. There's
just
no way for the lemur to tell where the finger is exactly because human
finger tips are not infinitely small. Nails work better, but the idea of
scratching
the lemur makes me uncomfortable (I just bought it, so I"m a little scared).
I have 2 wacom pens that work really well with the touch screen, especially
for precise movements. I even taped tiny little plastic balls to my finger
tips;
this also works well (looks goofy if lights are on).

I've never tried ImproSculpt (though, I think I saw you using it in a
video).
At the moment, I'm trying my best NOT to learn/make any new instruments and
ImproSculpt looks like a beast!

Yes, you should definately use nails instead of the flesh of the fingers.
The bigger "fingerprint" makes shadows for the sensors, so one finger
might "hide" behind another. This does not happen if you use the
nails. I've talked to the tech guys at Jazzmutant about it and this is
what they recommended as well. They also said the Lemur was build to
take some beating, you could almost smash it with a hammer (his words,
not mine).
