[Csnd] 3D-sounds and conversions (between the formats)

Subject[Csnd] 3D-sounds and conversions (between the formats)
Hello again!
I wonder. I had such good luck and good quality with the hrtfstat opcode,
that I consider using it for other 3D experiments. Usually I work with spat3d
or something like it though. So I can have distance and reverbaration. What
would be the best way to go from B-format to hrtf? Or should I reconsider my
basic 3D-creation opcodes? What are your suggestions?
Kindest regards & sorry, if I miss something obvious
           Julien

whatever speaker setup is best, send each speaker feed to
a hrtf opcode with coordinates set to the correct speaker
position. That should work well.
Brian might have something more to say about this.

OK. But it's definitely B-format to speaker-setup to HRTF binaural.
So Brian, or who ever has a good idea about that, which speaker setup would
be best to get a good 3D-audio impression. The more the better?
   Kindest regards

Hi Julien,

You must also keep in mind that hrtf uses different localization cues
from spat 3d and ambisonics. while spat3d and ambisonics use mostly
amplitude differences, hrtf codifies phase and time information, so
there´s really no direct method of conversion.

Cheers,
Andrés

Hey Victor!
time is no issue, as long as the result is satisfying. :-)
Btw.: Are there any other hrtfs useable with csound than those linked from
the HRTF opcodes? I've just heard, that there are more and I was willing to
test a bit.
   Warm regards
         Julien

Hi,

Do you mean impulse responses or opcodes?

Cheers,
Andrés

I meant: Where can I get more csound-compatible impulse-responses?
   Thanks and regards

I think the problem is creating the format Csound expects. I think it
is a raw file which contains all the impulse responses. To use another
set, you´d have to get the impulse responses together taking up the
same length.
I´m mostly guessing though...

Maybe someone has done this? I haven´t heard about it...

Cheers,
Andrés

Hi,
I am glad the HRTFstat opcode is working well!
Yes, decoding to loudspeaker and 'hrtfing' each loudspeaker can give very
interesting results. Accuracy/efficiency issues still relate to the
spatialisation algorithm chosen.
I am currently investigating a tool for various spatialisation methods,
loudspeaker setups, room parameters and dynamic source/receiver behaviour
using the dynamic HRTF opcodes.
The data files use the MIT KEMAR HRTFs, stored spectrally (for efficiency).
Any replacement file would need to contain the same number of spectral HRTFs
of the same length, measured at the same points, arranged in the same way
etc. Unfortunately, this is not the case in, for example, the CIPIC HRTFs.

Hello Brian!
Thanks for the explanations. So I'll try my hand at this technique b-form to
speaker setup to HRTF. Good enough for me, for a while. :-)
   Kindest regards
          Julien
