[Csnd] launching Csound from a Browser App

Subject[Csnd] launching Csound from a Browser App
Hello Csounders,

I am looking for some help/advice or a solution to launching Csound5
from the Mozilla Firefox Browser specifically
(but would be happy with a Safari solution as well.)

In the past, I used to enjoy the fact that I could install the Csound
Catalog on my HD and (from Internet Explorer)
click on a .orc or .sco or .csd file and automatically launch Csound
from the browser and load that
chosen .csd into (at the time) MacCsound and then render it.

I would do this by setting up a .csd MIME type and then tell my
browser how to identify files wth .orc, .sco, or .csd extensions
and then specify that the browser should handle such files by
launching a specific application - then MacCsound.

I am trying to do this again.
(In hopes of discovering a solution for the OLPC XO laptop as well)

So
- I know about the MisFox Application - that lets me edit and add
MIME types on the Mac for Safari
- I know about CSedit - that lets me edit and add MIDI types on the
Mac for Firefox

With no success so far, I have tried to get a .csd to launch the
Csound5GUI, Csoun5CSDplayer, Smultron, BBedit, nothing?

Any clues, advice, secrets or success to report?

Anyone in the Csound community launching Csound directly from their
Browsers?

I just installed the MIME Edit plugin:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4498
It looks like it might do the trick. I will test it later when I get a
chance.

Rory.

No joy here, I can't seem to stop firefox from simply opening the file.
I don't know much about MIME types but is the problem a result of Csound
not being a registered MIME application type?

Rory.

Sad,

Same with me.
Firefox just opens the files.
Explorer used to launch them - but FIrefox is open source and used on
the OLPC XO.

Maybe we should register Csound as a MIME type?
How do we do this? Victor? John? Andres? Michael? Csound5 Developers?

Hi DrB.

For firefox, you can try the MIME Edit extension:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4498

Just create a new mime type like name: 'application/x-csound',
application: 'csound', extension: 'csd'.

I can't test it since I just have firefox 3.0b3 installed at the moment,
which isn't compatible with this extensions. But it should work.

For the olpc, wouldn't make more sense to open csd files with a frontend
(to edit it and then play)? Isn't Greg Thompson working on this. If so,
if he associates the mime type handled by his activity with the .csd
extension, it should work, both from the WebActivity and from the Journal.

Best,

-c.

Forgot to say:

you can also just edit the
.mozilla/firefox/yourprofilename.default/mimeTypes.rdf.

Just copy another entry and modify the values as needed. Then you can
choose the application to open it from within the firefox settings
(preferences -> applications).

Best,

I'm not even sure this is the reason for it not working, perhaps someone
else out there knows more about this? I think registering new types if
relatively simple.

someone else can give it a go and report back.

Thanks Cesare,

I did not get this browser solution to work.
I had downloaded and installed the MIME Edit extension.

With it, I tried many options - but....
In MIME edit, I can/must sepcify:

MIME Type:
Description:
Extension:

then

When a file of this type is encountered either
1. Open it using the default application
2. Open it with ------- choose...
3. Save it to Disk

Ah, I forgot... of course, it's the server that should send the mime
type associated with an extension, too.

I've added:

AddType text/x-csound .csd

to .htaccess at csounds.com

So, remove the mime edit extensions. It's not even needed. If you have
created an entry with it remove it before uninstalling the extensions.

Then on csounds.com click on a .csd file. Firefox should ask you what to
do with this. Choose open with... and navigate to your csound
executable. If you don't want the dialog to choose whether to save or
open with csound, check the checkbox at the bottom.

Cesare,

Cool. This is helpful and close.

- A dialog box come up now when I clicked on a .csd from cSounds.com
- It asked me if I wanted to open this .csd with the default (in my
current case - smultron)
- I told it to do this by default. (and given my smultron shortcuts,
I can quickly launch Csound from that .csd with a single key combo.

But
- I was not given any other choices but smultron
- I could not get the Csound5GUI to load the .csd into it's editor by
default
- I could not get Winsound to load the .csd into it's editor or
Csound5.app either.
- I would LOVE to be able to call Csound with a commandline from the
browser with the .csd I selected at the end of the command
  - such as: csound -odac i_clicked_this.csd

Ok,

create a text file (a shell script) like this:
#!/bin/sh
csound -odac $1

call it 'csoundlauncher.sh'

chmod a+x csoundlauncher.sh

Then in firefox, go to preferences->applications (from the menu). Find
the entry for the csound mime and change the application to launch it
(choose 'use other...' and then select the shell script you've just made.

I've tested it here and it works. Let me know.

Cesare,

I think we are very very close with this.

But...

I am going to our Instruments section of cSounds.com and selecting Ian's RTCsound Collection

Before, when I said to use the default, I would click on a .csd and it would load the csd into Smultron
and then I could launch it from there....

But Now...

I get the following dialog box from Firefox....

Download Error

/Users/dB/fofx6.csd could not be opened, because of an unknown error occurred.

Try saving to disk first and then opening the file.

I think we are very very close here.

-dB

PS.  I changed the script to make the path even more explicit:

/usr/local/bin/csound -odac $1

PPS:  It might be worth noting that Pieman's script in Smultron is:

#!/bin/sh
cd %%d
/usr/local/bin/csound -odac %%p

I've added:

AddType text/x-csound .csd

to .htaccess at csounds.com

So, remove the mime edit extensions. It's not even needed. If you have created an entry with it remove it before uninstalling the extensions.

Then on csounds.com click on a .csd file. Firefox should ask you what to do with this. Choose open with... and navigate to your csound executable. If you don't want the dialog to choose whether to save or open with csound, check the checkbox at the bottom.

Hi DrB.

For firefox, you can try the MIME Edit extension:

Just create a new mime type like name: 'application/x-csound', application: 'csound', extension: 'csd'.

I can't test it since I just have firefox 3.0b3 installed at the moment, which isn't compatible with this extensions. But it should work.

For the olpc, wouldn't make more sense to open csd files with a frontend (to edit it and then play)? Isn't Greg Thompson working on this. If so, if he associates the mime type handled by his activity with the .csd extension, it should work, both from the WebActivity and from the Journal.

With no success so far, I have tried to get a .csd to launch the

Any clues, advice, secrets  or success to report?

Anyone in the Csound community launching Csound directly from their
Browsers?

I don't know what could be.

Try to change the settings in preferences->applications back to 'always
ask' and then when you click on the csd and the dialog appears choose
the shell script. Also, verify the permissions, it it is executable.

Subject[Csnd] Re: Re: launching Csound from a Browser App
So.... Interesting.

I do have both choices now - smultron and my csoundlauncher.sh
I told it to always ask.
When it asked.
- I chose smultron - it downloaded the .csd into smultron and using a
key combination I was able to launch csound.
- I chose csoundlauncher.sh - it starts to download and then I get
the error message.

I moved the launcher into another folder. re-linked to it. Chaged
the filetype to firefox (not smultron). Still no go.

I will now repair my disk permissions... and get back to you.

Subject[Csnd] Re: Re: launching Csound from a Browser App
On linux, when Firefox is set up to open a file with an application in
this way (I mean, without asking where to save/download it) it is put
into the /tmp directory. Then the application (in our case csound) opens
it from there.

I see from the path that you're on Os X. I don't know where Firefox
saves these temporary files on Os X, but the problem could be related to
this.

Still trying to get to the bottom of this.
By default, it saves the tmp files or downloads things to my
desktop. I can probably change that?
I could also try to uninstall and re-install firefox.

Subject[Csnd] Re: Re: launching Csound from a Browser App
Reinstalling wouldn't help. You should close Firefox, remove your
profile directory (should be .mozilla, but I don't know where it is
located on Os X) and then relaunch it. Keep in mind that you will loose
all the settings and bookmarks.

But I don't think this is necessary.

Maybe somebody more knowledgeable than me about Os X can help you.

Subject[Csnd] Re: launching Csound from a Browser App
Thanks Cesare for all your help.

Hopefully your solution will work on the little OLPC XO - since that
is a linux os.
Strange that I am having problems with my mac. I am about to try
everything we have done on another mac - maybe it's something I have
installed
that is messing with things.

I did do all you suggested. I deleted the profile and relaunched a
clean firefox - but.... same problem.
it works if I choose smultron as the intermediary, but if I use your
shell script and launch Csound directly - no go.... error downloading
file.

maybe there is a mac person with some firefox insight?

I'll let you know what happens on my other macintosh laptops.

Subject[Csnd] Re: launching Csound from a Browser App
Cesare,

Well. I installed everything fresh on another 10.4.11 OsX Intel
MacBook Pro - and I had the same problem there too.

Maybe someone will know the firefox secret for the Mac. Maybe it
will work with leopard. I'll upgrade to 10.5 in the next few weeks.

I'll let you know if things you suggested worked on the OLPC XO - but
maybe you could let me know if these tricks work on your XO!

Subject[Csnd] Re: Re: launching Csound from a Browser App
This won't work on the XO.

With the settings I've added at csounds.com, .csd when you click on a
file hosted there, it will be downloaded instead than showed as a text
in the browser. It will show up in the Journal.

But you do want the .csd to be rendered when you click on its link on
the XO? What if one wants to edit it instead? or save it? You can't
associate more than one action with a behavior in the WebActivity.
Wouldn't be more useful to open it with a front-end? Isn't somebody
already working on this (I mean a Csound editor/front-end for the XO)?

Best,

-c.

Subject[Csnd] Re: Re: Re: launching Csound from a Browser App
Cesare,

Last spring, Victor Lazzarini, Steven Yi and I worked together on a
single soundfont orchestra (using the sfplay and fluid family of
opcodes) to play any General MIDI file. M-Audio/Avid donated a
General MIDI sample set that I am currently re-editing and re-
looping. My revised version of the sample set will be offered under
the Creative Commons License (and will be done in 2 months - we will
be able to distribute it with Csound and include examples in the
manual as well!).

The OLPC goal:

- when an XO User clicks on a .mid file in the browser, it would
render the file in real-time using this GM.csd orchestra and the Free/
Custom M-Audio GM sample set. (Like Quicktime on the Mac).

Yes, based on the XO Activities that he built using a Csound Server
Model for the XO, Greg Thompson is currently developing a CsoundXO
launcher-editor-player for the XO that will have an onscreen keyboard
and sliders and that will allow the playback of MIDI instruments and
General MIDI files. He is also working on a Remixer Actrivity and a
Sampler. (Both will take advantage of the 8.5GB donated sample set
that I collected, edited, and organized last year and that we are
about to announce and release in the next couple of weeks.

Still, there is a goal - like with Quicktime Musical Instruments on
the Mac - or the comparable Roland GM Player under Windows - to be
able to play MIDI files from the Browser - using Csound.

It would be nice to do something like David Akbari's recent Wave and
AIF player solution from the Browser as well So that Csound could
serve as an iTunes-like Utility as well.

Since I was able to do this sort of thing in the past with MIME types
and Explorer, I was hoping I might be able to figure a way of doing
it again on the XO.

You are right, we might need some sort of iTunes like activity for
the XO that is launched when the child clicks on a .mid or .wav
or .ogg or .aif or .csd link.

I would appreciate your further thoughts on this. Maybe Greg will
also need to create a Browser Activity to do the above.

I will be contacting all the CsoundXO developers tomorrow with an
overview of:

- where we are headed at OLPC (what projects I am working on with
their in-house programmers)
- what progress we have made recently
- to find out what project you all might be pursuing and where you
are at
- to coordinate some communication, sharing, dreaming, and exchange
on the CsoundXO forums at cSounds.com

Thanks again for your help with this attempt to solve the problem
yesterday.

-dB
