Subject[Csnd] csound documentation
Hello,

I have been teaching csound this semester and my students and I are missing some small things which - seams to me - would make the life of beginners much easier.

I am speaking in concrete of the documentation. Not of the content, but the way it is linked to csound. Giving supercollider as an example, you have easy access to the documentation of the opcodes without
much effort. Of course in csound, if you can set properly your text editor you will probably be able to set everything according to your needs, but a beginner possibly won't. I don't know how difficult it is to implement this (MacCsound did something in this direction which I think it is very positiv) but I would like to know the opinion of the users community.

Thanks,

-Luis

Hi I believe that the inbuilt editor in csound 5 gui can open selected opcodes (like maccsound) but unfortunately this is not currently working on the mac. I managed to get smultron to do this and it works fine. But the best things are in blue! Now you can even open the manual csd examples of selected opcodes (like max/msp) with a short-cut.

Which frontend are you using? In Lettuce users only have to place the
cursor on an opcode and press f1 which automatically opens the manual at
that opcode entry. I think MacCsound does this as well, and Blue for
that matter. Forgive me for asking but what could be easier than a
single keystroke? Great to see others on the list teaching Csound, is it
just me or does there seem to be an increase in the numbers of people
teaching Csound lately?

Rory.

I used to work with MacCsound as a text editor running csound on the terminal as well as a GUI. Now I am starting to set csound-x with Emacs (Aquamacs) which works fine in the  MMM mode. But to use it with csound one may have to learn Emacs before csound...

I am curious about Lettuce but I am running Mac. I should also take a look at Blue, although, it seams to me at the first look, that the main concept is different from the classic csound.

Csound as changed a lot in the last years and frontends like Lettuce or MacCsound are great. The only problem is that they are platform dependent. I think this leads to some confusion at the beggin when learning csound (some of my students use Mac, some Windows and others use Linux...).

But I am curious about teaching csound: are you using always Lettuce in your lessons?

I'm using it with my undergrads as it has a few simple features that
seems to help the students a lot, the best one being popup hints for
opcodes. I give my postgrads the choice to use whatever they like, some
use Letttuce, some use MacCsound and a few have starting using Blue. I
think that if the csound5GUI editor had integrated play/pause/stop
buttons that it would servr very well as a cross-platform csound editor.

Rory.

p.s. I intend to rewrite Lettuce using a cross-platform GUI library over
the summer, I have the gui builder already done and if we get as much
rain this summer in Ireland as we did last summer I should get the rest
done in no time!

Csound5GUI has integrated play/pause/start buttons. The problem is that
is not as stable as I would like, and goes down whenever csound
segfaults...

Andrés

Hi Andres, I know that csound5gui has this feature but it is detached
from the editor. All the other editors around have an integrated
play/stop buttons so users don't have to switch around windows when they
want to run their instruments. If it did it could function quite well as
a standalone cross-platform editor/frontend.

You can use keyboard shortcuts from the editor.

Cheers,
Andrés

Cool, I didn't realise that. I would still prefer to see them integrated
into one rather than have several windows but this is good to know, cheers,

Rory.

Hi Luis -

I'm on the same search path as you, and by the same reasons
(MacCsound - sad to say - less or more dying, and for our students we
are looking for an easy to use and platform independent Editor).
Jacob Joaquin pointed out jEdit ( www.jedit.org ) as a platform
independent and intuitive text editor, and he wrote a plugin for
highlighting the Csound syntax ( http://www.thumbuki.com/csound/
jedit/ ). Also, Jake can perhaps include other features, like manual
entry or quick reference.

Just if you like to try this, too ...

Grüße -
