In the holidays we where in a hotel, one of our friends is a great Dutch guitar player, John van der Veer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQp2Ux2xD4o (We actually jammed together). We had interesting talks about recording guitars. You are probably missing the profiling part. It is able to capture the characteristics of any amplifier and save that. Then you can even tweak it deeper than the original amp, if you like... Hm. Guessing... It could be "just" capturing an ir and refining some eq/compression at the profiling stage (??). Then it combines this with its other effects. They say the amp is profiled 'at its current setting' (don't they? ), so my guess is that the working of the controls of the original amp is not necessarily reflected in the gain/bass/mid/treble/presence controls on the device.
