i asked (again) and was told:

  I have looked at the link provided below but unfortunately the patch
  is no longer available. If I can find the patch that fixes this
  issue I am happy to apply it. 

  The next major release of Sympa was released earlier this year and
  we hope to install this in the new year. 

so that is alright then.....
