I agree, Dave. Farnell writes very clearly and, despite the examples being written in PD, the algorithms are outlined well enough to make them easily portable. I designed a video piece around MaxMSP ports of some of his examples. Although MAX is similar, there are a number of rethinks needed when porting. Anyway, I found his book to be the best introduction to top-down  sound synthesis I've come across.

Agree++.

It's worth pointing out that Mr Farnell is an exceptionally clear 
writer. Designing Sound is one of the best books of any kind that I've read.
