[Csnd] Google Music - Artists

Subject[Csnd] Google Music - Artists
Hi All,

I thought this was sort of interesting, Google Music launched today
and they allow direct signup by artists:

http://music.google.com/artists/

Artists get to name their own prices and setup their own pages. It's
pretty much the same fees structure as it is for selling apps on the
Android Marketplace, $25 to sign up (one time fee), and 30% of sales
goes to Google.

Anyone have thoughts about fees compared to other services?

Thanks!
steven

The real question for me would be, how does the marketing work? How would the artist be able to compete with already established artists? I know nothing about services like google music. I'm curious to know what other alternatives would be.

Yes, this is definitely interesting. And the deal seem to be ok.
I guess it will be worth something to be available in the Google shop,
but marketing is of course DIY as long as the artist is not signed to
a record label..
As long as it's not an exclusive deal it should be worth the $25.

One of my master students, Ingebjorg Hagerup, recently did a thesis on
digital distribution.
Even if most of this material is in Norwegian, you might be able to
get something out of the table of distributiors she looked at:
http://urort.nrkp3.no/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/20111102-digital-distribusjon.pdf
Radio documentary available here (also in Norwegian, it's about time
you learn this very useful language...)

And her music used to test distribution channels:

Knowing Google, I'm guessing this will be very user friendly, and combined with the moderate pricing and fairly high share for the artist, I think it's definately worth a second look.

Though it may not be a comparable service, I'm a big fan of bandcamp.com. For those that arent familiar with it; it's basically a hosting service for artists and/or labels, where you get your own page, much like myspace, but way better. You can name your own price (or let people download your music for free), create whole album-downloads (with hidden bonus material), incorporate sale of physical copies, embed the player and store functionalities to your own website, they have a facebook app that's very easy to use, and best of all; there's no sign-up fee, and they only take a 15 % share of your revenue. Also, compared to myspace and other similar service, the sound quality and site stability is far superior. As far as I know, myspace streams at 64 kbps, bandcamp uses 128kbps. Downloaders can choose between 320kpbs mp3, flac, wav, Apple lossless and other high quality formats.

And no, I'm not affiliated, just a satisfied customer... :)
To see what I'm talking about, you can visit some of my projects:

The Google service is only available to US citizens. Do you know if the
bandcamp scheme is more international?

Yes, as far as I know, there's no restrictions on nationality on bandcamp. I'm based in Norway...
