Git is a distributed source control system that we developers use to
keep in step, experiment, roll-back etc.  The releases are (reasonably
correct) snapshots of the system at a suitable moment.  We continue
development between, and use git to avoid stepping on each other.
  The "master" is on Sourceforge.

We used to use CVS for this but for reasons we changed to the more
flexible git.
