I've had an idea. Using the Jacko opcodes could someone send the
output of an instrument directly to jack? If so this offers the
possibility of doing multichannel instruments inside ableton live with
max4live. One can set up a live device that sends its outputs (say 8
channels) directly to Jack via Csound, bypassing the live output
altogether. Partikkel may in this case offer some interesting
possibilities inside live. Would this work?

It's currently impossible to have a Live device with more than 2
outputs. And side-chaining isn't supported either (from what I can
see). But if the device did not have any inputs at all (say it read
samples from a buffer internally) then would it be possible to only
use it as an interface inside Live and bypass the live audio chain
altogether?

I think this would only be useful if Max and Ableton Live were using jack too, otherwise you would need to be responding to two different audio callbacks, right?

I guess with the jacko opcode it's a possibility. But God knows what
will happen. The jacko opcode does something to the way csound
performs that I am not sure I follow completely. There is possibility
for some funny interaction there.

Thanks! OK so I'll give it a shot and see if it works as a hack in live.

Will report back here.
