[Csnd] Workshop ideas for Csound Conference

Subject[Csnd] Workshop ideas for Csound Conference
Hi All,

I had a couple of ideas I thought of proposing for the Csound
conference, but I wanted to see if there is interest first before
proposing them.

The first idea is a walkthrough through Csound code. The idea is that
you could come and learn about the internals of Csound, how it works.
The targeted audience would be those interested in the code base,
whether that's to learn how an audio engine like Csound runs, or
whether you'd like to get involved with working on Csound. I imagined
this as a guided walkthrough. Like a walking tour, you'd be free to
ask questions anytime.

The second idea is a session on building applications with the API.
The idea I had for this was a to take a tour of the API methods. This
would be an interactive workshop with planned exercises for all of us
to go through. I had the thought that using Python would be the ideal
candidate to do these exercises. The same API calls would be used if
using other languages, so you could take the knowledge over to
Java/Android, iOS, C/C++, Lua, etc.

A few thoughts:

* I don't know if anyone has proposed something similar
* The first session idea would be very code heavy and require
knowledge in C. The discussion coming from this session could be
captured so that we could create technical documentation for Csound's
internals, which is something I think would be a very good thing for
the software and community.
* The second session could be captured to create another document for
building applications with Csound. There's some good information out
already by various members of the community, but I think we need to
get updated for CS6 as well as have a central document that lives with
Csound itself.
* I don't know if the organizers are interested in these talks either. :)

If you're interested in either of these, please do chime in.

Thanks!
steven

Sign me up.  I’m looking to start giving a hand in supporting the codebase and it would be great to go over the code and api use cases as well as confirm my testing setup in a non-solitary setting before diving in for real.

Thanks for suggesting this, Steven.

I second that, the topics are excellent. A video, or transcript would be great.

We will be recording, videotaping and (hopefully) streaming every session at the conference.
All will be made available on the Csounds.com website after the conference is over.
And, our plan is for those attending to get Commemorative USB ThumbDrives that will
hold "all" the videos and "some" of the software presented (given permission of the developers),
and "some" of the pieces presented (given permission from the composers).

Hello,

These are both most excellent ideas that should help complement existing
documentation.
If you do organise such workshops, could they be recorded on video so that those
who live in Europe or elsewhere and can't attend might learn, if not participate?
