[Csnd] Questions about the conference and Boston

Subject[Csnd] Questions about the conference and Boston
OK, I've got my plane tickets and registered for the conference. My wife and two young sons will be sightseeing while I'm Csounding.

My questions --
(1) What sort of computing device should I bring? I have a huge "portable desktop" that's really powerful, but not exactly meant for carrying all over the place. That replaces my older, much lighter laptop, but the battery doesn't charge on that one, meaning I would be much more dependent on finding electrical outlets.

(2) Where should we stay? I hope there's some place reasonably cheap near the conference site. Is there a place all the Csounders are congregating?

(3) And (getting totally OT here) does anyone have recommendations for things my wife should do with the kids?

Looking forward to meeting you all!
Forrest

Hi Forrest,

Glad to hear you'll be there!  I can't speak to 1 and 3, but I had questions about #2 myself.  I know with other conferences I've been to, there was usually some kind of recommended places to stay list.  Sometimes the conferences have even worked out some kind of deals with local hotels.  I think it'd be great if the conference organizers could put together some kind of list if possible.

Additionally, it might be nice to create a list of people looking to share rooms to save some money.  I know it's not very cheap for a lot of the Europeans coming over, and for some who may not know a lot of people it might be odd to look for people to share a room with.  Maybe someone could start a google doc form or something where people could see who's interested in rooms?  Someone would have to manage it and update it if people have reported they're set for lodging. Might be a nice way to meet fellow Csounders!

Doubly wish I could go because I used both blue and MacCsound to do my senior thesis at Berklee!

OK, so I've registered and submitted a piece.

However, under the number of channels there was only stereo, quad, and 5.1. Is this really the limitation? My piece is 6 channels (3 stereo pairs) but would require at least 8 speakers to be performed in a larger space. Is this possible? Is there a spec of the available set-up?

Thanks!

SubjectRe: [Csnd] Questions about the conference and Boston
Hello Forest.

Just returned from the deep woods of Maine (and 100ft underwater diving wrecks in Newport) plus a summer semester of 7 courses per week
Plus and Advanced 5-week seminar that i offered on Max for Chairman and Deans at the College.  It was a blur.  Diving as much as I can
now to clear my head and find some peace - the Csound (literally) is pretty nice down there too!

Hopefully you and everyone on the list can forgive me for taking so long to get back in touch.

So happy you (and your family) are coming to the Csound Conference in October.

Q1 - Bring the computer you need to play your piece (of course).  And... know that we have power receptacles everywhere for your tired battery.

Q2 - We will have more info on hotels and rates by the end of next week.  (My thinking is that it might be the Sheraton)

Q3 - the Museum of Science, The Computer Music, The Boston Aquarium, The Duck Tours, Faneuil Hall MarketPlace, Boston Museum of Fine Arts
(and much more....  Boston is an AMAZING city.)

regarding Q2... More details here....

Berklee gets a deal with both the Sheraton and Hilton (each less than 2-blocks from the front door of our main building)
I had also thought the MidTown would be a good choice, but it turns out... it is a little further, and they don't have the
Berklee deal - so... it might end up costing more.  Please hang in for a week and you will get the official announcement/advice
from me/Berklee on the conference site.

Here are some preliminaries:

The Hilton, Sheraton, and Eliot  are one block from Berklee - but pricey.
Hilton is closest (300 yards), Sheraton is 500 yards.  Eliot is 1 block
We can get a block of rooms there, but they are still too pricey.
(Chowning and Risset will stay at one of these.)

there is the MidTown - 3 block away and more reasonable
(This will probably be the "affordable" and yet close hotel that I would recommend for everyone.

Berklee is in the "Back Bay" - so you can search for Boston Back Bay Hotels to see what I mean.
They are mostly 4-5 start and expensive.  (and you could try to use PriceLine to offer them a low price and see if they bite)

Steven,

Your suggestion about a list of people wanting to share rooms is excellent.
In addition to posting more info about places to go and things to see and do in Boston for families, spouses, and us...
- like Media Lab and Harvard tours
I will ask my webmaster - Tom Shani to post more links and to create a system that would allow registered attendees to
share that interest in sharing a room.

Hello Peiman,

So happy you are coming and can't wait to present your piece.

I will look into 8-channel playback for one of the nights and one of the venues.
Regrettable, none of our concert halls here at Berklee are set up for anything
more than 5.1.  Your piece might just do the trick of inspiring Berklee to go for
at least 8 speakers and a sub in one of our spaces.  I will keep you posted.

Thanks!

Wish I could go! I know it will be a blast... please report all the juicy details here.

Doubly wish I could go because I used both blue and MacCsound to do my senior thesis at Berklee!

Cheers,
David
