[Csnd] Fwd: Max V. Mathews (1926-2011)

Subject[Csnd] Fwd: Max V. Mathews (1926-2011)
Very sad news today. This is via the CEC mailing list. Jon Appleton
attached a small (44K) Word document to his post as a personal
remembrance. I am not sure if this is something I can technically post
to the list ( a few people here are also on the CEC list so will have it
already); but I can of course send it to anyone who asks.

I was fortunate enough to meet and shake hands with Max at the ICMC
conference in 2000, where in his enthusiasm for invention, and in his
ineluctable creativity, he put us young-uns to shame. It is one thing to
invent a whole new domain of research, another to establish it as a
world-wide and ever-expanding phenomenon that combined art and science
as never known before, and of course Max did both. It would be no
exaggeration to say that everything that exists today by way of
"computer music technology" does so because of him.

Thanks for notifying this list; this is very sad news indeed. He was
so inspiring with his joy and love of computer music, and of course
his contributions can never truly be measured. Amazing, amazing man
whom I'm sure we will all remember fondly.

should we do a tribute/rememberance as a csound [or even electronic
music] community?

maybe something like picking a time for people to play/create some
electronic music in remembrance.

i did not meet him, but certainly benefitted from the work he did. if
anyone has any good ideas for memorials, please post ...

max mathews was the father of computer-music, it's impossible to do
anything on this field that's not indebted, one way or another, to his
work. csound is a direct descendant of the music-N family. he deserves all
our admiration and gratitude.

max was in montevideo in 1997, giving two presentations at our school of
music, one was about the history of computer music, the other was a
demonstration of the radio baton. it was a unique opportunity to listen to
this chapter of history told in the first person... i had the privilege of
spending much time with him and his wonderful wife marjorie during the few
days they stayed here. after that i only had a brief encounter with him in
buenos aires in 2006.

it's difficult not to be sad with the news of his death. but we shouldn't
be. we must celebrate his long, wonderful life, filled with all the
achievements a man could wish.

This is very sad, indeed. I saw Max in 2005 at Berklee and I remember
how amazed I was that someone could perform on the eponymous radio
baton with such virtuosity. Seeing Max in person was truly an
inspiring experience, and one that I will cherish forever.

We should also take some time to thank the people who, through their
interactions with Dr. Mathews, continue to educate and facilitate new
generations of learners exposed to computer music and who contribute
to its permanence. Guys like Dr. Richard Boulanger and Dr. Barry
Vercoe immediately come to mind.

Max Mathews is the father of Computer Music, and through our
interactions with his children his legacy will live on within us
forever.
