---Yes! Being from and been in Los Angeles since 1960 and seen the arts here
(audio/visual/performeing, and all) I tend to agree. It's very mercenary
here. And very pretencious,... people pretend to be art and culture lovers,
when all it is, is the arrogance of the snob factor by the rich patrons
who want to only "look like" they are cultured in the eyes of their peers.

Fortunately, there are those who truly enjoy art & culutre, it's a turn-on
for them. LA, it's money and power first, the art side of things is
secondary or tertiary. Maybe that's why I like the art/film/TV/music and
theatre scene so much when I go to London. Don't know if it really is,
but it "feels like" over there it's the art first, money second. The
culture of culture over there seems more engrained in the culture,...
therefore less superficial and pretentious.

When I was studying music, I went to the symphony here. Met a fellow who
was trying to impress a couple women in his clique with his culture about
how "classic" the material was. So I asked him to define what made it
classic. He came up with all kinds of B.S. and he included Italian Opera
in the classic catagory. But he didn't know Latin and didn't understand
any it. Long story short,... he finally admitted that he didn't understand
anything about music, he was there to impress and look hip and cool in his
suit and was there to "look cultured" rather than actually being cultured.

When I go to the theatre in London and I talk to the locals sitting near me
during the interval (what we call intermission), I find that they get it,
they know about it. It's part of their.

Los Angeles, it's about fast women and loose cars, or loose women and fast
cars, looking like a big cheese when they really aren't, and BS'ing everyone.
It's like that joke about American TV,... reality shows are so un-real.
It's about big money, big sports venues and big pay outs.

Culture in Los Angeles is an after-thought, while in London it's egrained
in the culture.

Like a "I'd rather be,..." car license plate frames would say "I'd rather
be in London, England".

I hope nobody you talk with at galleries or concerts gives a crap what
you think of their opinions or tastes in art.

Stop confusing the symptom with the disease.
These people started bullshitting you because you made them feel threatened.

You seem to detest wealthy patrons, but I suspect these artists who
are so deserving of your attention have a different relationship with
them, and I suspect that relationship is a large part of the problem.
