Subject[Csnd] phase and multichannel audio
Dear all,

I was wandering if someone could explain how phase affects
multichannel sound projection. From my understanding surround panners
don't deal with phase and only work by changing the relative level in
each speaker. How can this be enhanced through processing the phase
information and what difference would that make? (I know that
ambisonic systems deal with phase but I'm not sure how exactly).

Best,

Peiman

not sure if what i will say qualifies as "phase processing", but one
strategy to augment the traditional amplitude panning model is to add
small delays to each channel (2-20 ms). in my experience, this can
add three things:

first, by "decorrelating" a mono signal, one can gain a degree of
richness in the resulting projection not present with simple amplitude
variations.

second, according to the precedence (haas) affect, we localise a sound
according to the direction we hear it coming from first. thus, one
can aid the directivity of a projection by adjusting delays to follow
this principle -- in theory (and according to my experience), even if
sound is coming through all channels at equal volume, if the signal is
coming from one speaker 5 ms before all the others, i tend to localise
it in the direction of that channel.

finally, if virtual sound sources are moving in time, the delays can
be altered to create "doppler" like pitch changes. i have a csd
somewhere which augments vbap with delays in order to attempt to
imitate virtual sound positions in a bounded space (it is based on
ideas from joachim goßman). i could dig it up if you're interested...
