Subject[Csnd] Csound works in Crimson Mix Dance Performance - Toronto, Nov. 20th
Below you will find details of an upcoming dance and music performance
featuring some works realized by Csound, including Aaron Krister
Johnson's and my own (although I must say, mine sounds exactly like a
piano piece). I think the pieces by Lydia Ayers and Chuckk Hubbard
also were done with Csound, and I wouldn't be surprised if some of the
others were also. If you are in Toronto on the 20th, consider going. I
heard several of these mixes at the 2010 ICMC, and it is surprising
how effective the format of 60 1 minute pieces is in terms of
presenting real tastes of a lot of different styles, techniques, and
composers who are active today.

A maddening kaleidoscopic of dances will give way to wildly fused music when
60x60 Dance meets The Thing Is in Toronto

NOVEMBER 20, 2010 (TORONTO, ON) Internationally acclaimed 60x60 Dance teams
up with The Thing Is in an exciting performance of contemporary music and
modern dance unlike any you’ve seen before.

In an astonishing combination of dance and music, Toronto choreographer Viv
Moore will coordinate the Toronto debut of 60x60 Dance to start the evening.
60x60 Dance takes 60 one-minute audio works (by 60 different composers, of
which Kardonne is one) and pairs them with 60 new dances by different
choreographers, presented, without interruption, as a continuous one-hour
performance synchronized to an analog clock.

Time Out London says: "Either a genius or crazy concept for a dance show,
depending on how you look at it: 60 choreographers each create 60 seconds of
movement to be performed in succession, making one hour of fast-changing,
switched up dance ... if there's one thing you can say for sure, if won't be
boring." - LONDON 2012: TWO YEARS TO GO 60x60 Dance – Time Out London 2010

“It’s this kind of madness that makes the cultural world go round…” An
Express Without Any Delays By ROSLYN SULCAS, New York Times, November 17,
2008

Toronto composer Tova Kardonne’s fusion band, The Thing Is, runs to
heavy-grooving polyrhythmic layer-cakes of melody and counterpoint; her
eight-piece jazz-fusion unit The Thing Is brings her singular musical vision
to fruition with swaggering confidence, led by her vocals and joined by
special guests Ted Quinlan on guitar and Dave Restivo on piano.

“I was impressed by The Thing Is... Adventurous composition and great
musicianship combined with a wild array of influences for a cool and unique
sound.” - Alan Davis, Small World Music, President

With Viv Moore at the helm of the dance side of the collaboration, 60
compositions of the Crimson Mix were paired with a line-up of dancers
including Andrea Nann, Kathleen Rea, Meagan O’Shea and Karen and Allen
Kaeja. The full complement of dancers range in background from hip-hop to
circus, ballet to postmodern dance.

Gemini nominated Director and Award winning Choreographer Allen Kaeja -

Winston Spear is a comedian probably best known for the unique dance
routines he incorporates into his comedy act. Spear was a semi finalist for
NBC's Last Comic Standing in 2008 and Winner of the Canadian Comedy Award
for Best Stand-up Comic. King of the obscure.

Angola Murdoch's childhood was spent mostly upside down. Her background in
gymnastics and dance facilitate her ease in movement in the air and on the
ground.

Andrea Naan has received three Dora Mavor Moore Award Nominations for
Outstanding Performances.

Kathleen Rea is recipient of the K.M Hunter dance award

Conceived to showcase both the height and the breadth of music being created
by electro-acoustic composers, 60x60 Dance shares not only a composer with
The Thing Is, but also a genre-straddling indeterminacy of type that pushes
audiences to hear what they’re hearing, see what they’re seeing, and take
that as the first and last measure of the experience.

Yes, Michael, true that....!!

I also want to encourage any of you who think you can pull off a 5-10 minute microtonal/alternate tuning Csound work (and by microtonal, I don't mean concrete, noise, etc., please check out the rules on our site) by Dec. 15th to enter the UnTwelve composition competition. I mentioned it here before. It would be great to see a strong showing of Csounders.

First prize: $500
2nd prize: $250
3rd prize: $150

In addition, there will be some concert opportunities and some promotion, etc. of the finalists...

check out http://www.untwelve.org/  and follow the competition links for more info/details.

I also think it worth mentioning, there is also a now ongoing collaboration between UnTwelve and 60x60, and 2009 saw the first 'UnTwelve mix'. Like the other 60x60 ICMC mixes, it's already been heard lots of places, including internationally. We're planning another call for UnTwelve 1-minute pieces in the middle of 2011, so start planning. :)

how effective the format of 60 1 minute pieces is in terms of
presenting real tastes of a lot of different styles, techniques, and
composers who are active today.

Gemini nominated Director and Award winning Choreographer Allen Kaeja -
"Abattoir…a fierce and disturbing work...edgy and intriguing" - Globe and
Mail
