I do not think you can open it simply because the file produced is equal to 0
(zero) KB
and has width = 0

I know nearly nothing about OSX, but wouldn't it be possible
to create a libsndfile binary that links statically with
libFLAC, libogg and libvorbis?

If you have a script that does the build, you can pass it my way
and I can possibly help. If you rely on XCode or something similar
then its up to you :-).
