[Csnd] [OT] a request for stats

Subject[Csnd] [OT] a request for stats
Greetings,

I'm preparing an article on activity in the Linux audio world and would
like to know how many of you are using Linux for your soundwork. I'm not
asking if you use *only* Linux, I'm just interested in whether it is a
significant factor in your audio production.

I don't want to clog the lists, so feel free to respond directly.
(Though it's possible I'm not the only person who'd like to know the
figures.)

Best,

dp

SubjectRe: [Csnd] [OT] a request for stats
I use both Windows and Linux. I've never really used OS X.

I am increasingly using Linux over the years, partly because some
software I need is available only on Linux (e.g. Aelous the software
pipe organ), partly because of the ease of software installation and
maintenance (e.g. Synaptic) on Linux, partly because the toolchain is
free.

I feel that as operating systems, Linux and Windows perform about the
same these days; Windows is better than it used to be and Linux is
bigger and slower than it used to be.

On the whole I would be happy to use only Linux. I would be happier if
there was something like (that is, as good as) Sibelius or Cubase on
Linux. But for the algorithmic composition and software synthesis
stuff I do I think Linux is better.

I wish I had more experience with OS X but I have an aversion to the
Apple business model.

Regards,
Mike

I used to work on windows and on linux. Nowadays, I work exclusively on linux, mainly for the open source aspect. I get all the tools I need on linux: programming languages, libraries, pieces of software. As I'm a software engineer, this OS seems very natural to me. However, I think it's important that people can find 'out of the box' versions of Csound for their preferred OS.

pretty much all linux. i use windows to occasionally check functionality
of devices that have windows software associated with them, to see if
its something i can't live without. i get to service and deploy osx and
windows (and linux) at work but i don't get to use them for audio. i
feel that the tools are part of the outcome of art. in the course of my
personality striving to be original, i avoid using things that seem too
'cookie cutter' (and yet i play with mod trackers) or obviously the
result of one product or another. maybe i'm just cheep, or maybe i don't
like all that mousing around. its seems to keep me happy and engaged though.

Hi,

Does PhD research in audio count?
Although I'm not doing much music, I am working almost exclusively on
Linux for my research. I also have an OS X computer at the university,
which has the big advantage of running almost all the software I need:
Csound, CsoundQt, python, numpy, ipython.

Cheers,
Andrés

I'm primarily OSX these days, but the decision to move to OSX was more
so that I can test on OSX, Windows, and Linux (the latter two in
virtual machines). Running OSX in a virtual machine seemed difficult
on a non-Mac. Also, I found I liked the Macbook Pro hardware more
than other machines, so the hardware was a factor. I'm not a fan of
Apple as a company for many reason though. Since I use pretty much
all open-source applications for my personal work, I can move between
all three platforms without problems. I've considered moving to a
dual-boot with Fedora recently, however.

will i have been forced to move to linux (because of pc problems) i seen to like linux now and a program called Wine to run some windows programs on linux (its not a virtual machines) but, i have been able to install Live 7(a windows program) and other small windows programs work geat but some programs dont work because the Microsoft Frame Work dose not work in Wine
(its still under development) if the Microsoft Frame Work  works then alot more windows programs would work with
Linux's Wine. it would be cool i i can runs the windows version of Cecilia because it looks better! and may be Cabbage that dose not have a Linux version but is coming soon i hope!?  but it will same time if you dont make a linux version and just make a windows version and we all just run Wine but thats up to the developers and others choses?

I also use linux, most of the time.
I'd been using Windows exclusively, for many years and I never thought of using linux or macos.
The change began when I disvored the great software lilypond.
From this time on I became more and more interested in open source software, which I prefer now for most of my work.
I have to say I love csound (although  consider it to be quite complecated), lilypond, frescobaldi, latex ....
