[Csnd] Cryptic error message

Subject[Csnd] Cryptic error message
Hi list,

Just opened one of my older csds that uses MIDI automation with csound
5.15. It crashes every single time with a rather cryptic error
message: "this should not happen - contact jpff." So here I am,
contacting jpff :) What does this error message mean?

Thanks,

Alex

I think it means that you reached a part of the code which it was believed
could not happen, and so jpff would like to know what you were doing to
provoke it, like a csd or similar details

OK, I found a similar message "THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN -- CONTACT jpff"
It happen sif there is no score given in one route, and it is actually
harmless. If continues to generate an `infinite' score. I believed that
this was treated elsewhere so was interested in any time ir was triggered.
Like was it csd or orc/sco or what

Attachmentssampler.csd
Here's the csd that triggered it. It happens instantly once I send a
controller message and crashes csound (or CsoundQT) instantly.
Couldn't try in console because for some reason portmidi doesn't work
when I invoke csound from the console.

Alex

P.S. The error message pops up repeatedly, not just once.

To try in the terminal you need to add

-M

and it should do it.

I tried it here with virtual keyboard and it does not crash (-M0 -+rtmidi=virtual)

Hi Victor,

Thanks, that's what I did. But here's the error message I get:

error: -+rtmidi='portmidi': unknown module
*** error opening MIDI in device: -1 (Unknown MIDI error)

This is with csound 5.15. I might add that MIDI worked fine with 5.14.
But then again, I also just reinstalled my entire machine. Is there
anything else I need for portmidi?

Thanks,
Alex

Oh. Just noticed the following line when invoking csound:

WARNING: could not open library
'/Library/Frameworks/CsoundLib.framework/Versions/5.2/Resources/Opcodes/libpmidi.dylib'
(-1)

This is 5.15. on OS X.

I need to apologise for this, I have recently moved to 10.6 and portmidi was not configured correctly in my system, so the installer came out all wrong with regards to it.
I have re-uploaded a package which should fix this problem.

SubjectRe: [Csnd] Cryptic error message
No worries, Victor. I downloaded the new package and the portmidi
error message is gone now. Don't know though if that was connected to
my initial error and can't check right now b/c I'm not at home. Will
check when I get back. But thanks for the quick response and fix.
