[Csnd] WinXound Buffer Settings

Subject[Csnd] WinXound Buffer Settings
I'm experimenting a bit with WinXound. Its Settings dialog box seems to have
no fields for setting the audio or MIDI I/O, or the audio buffer sizes, so
I'm doing it by hand in the area.

What's odd is that the settings for -b and -B seem almost irrelevant in
terms of the MIDI response latency. If I edit the file to change from -b256
-B512 all the way up to -b2048 -B4096, I'd expect the latency to increase by
8x, but it doesn't. It increases by maybe 2x.

Making equivalent buffer size changes in the Configuration box in QuteCsound
causes a much more noticeable change in latency. A 256/512 setting is
noticeably snappier in QuteCsound from the Configuration box than in
WinXound from the line.

This is on a Windows 7 machine using ASIO4ALL as the driver.

Can anyone suggest what might be causing the difference and the lack of
difference? Is there an overriding configuration setting in WinXound that I
just haven't been able to find?

Never mind. Found it. (I can't really blame creeping senility, as I was
missing things that were right in front of my face 30 years ago.)

What was it that you found? Were you not applying the settings or something?

My eyeballs just breezed past the bottom half of the Compiler Settings tab
in the Settings box. The default flags were still set to -B4096, IIRC.

Possibly "default" isn't quite the right term, as the flags in this field
may override whatever is in . I haven't tested that. But in any
event, it's easy enough to get low-latency performance, once you see what's
in the box.

Hi Jim,
you can bypass the default WinXound settings (for the
compiler) by pressing CTRL+U (or from the menu "tools"
disable/enable "Use WinXound Flags") ... in this manner
you can switch between the default (WinXound+CsOptions)
settings and "CsOptions only" settings.

Maybe this can help you ...

Stefano
