Subject[Csnd] OT: live performance using csound and wiimote
Hello, everyone,

I just returned from the Seattle Improvised Music Festival, where I
met and played music with many fine musicians. I've posted 3 of my
performances at my site: two duets with Paul Hoskin (contrabass
clarinet) and a solo. I used csound controlled by a wiimote and
nunchuk controller. Many, many thanks to Dr. Boulanger for giving me
these controllers as a gift a couple of years ago. They have helped
make my playing much more responsive and expressive than my previous
approach.

For the duets I played in mono, for the solo I was in stereo.

I hope you enjoy these. Go to:

http://jolc.net/musicsite/improvs.html

and look for the Seattle links.

best,
Lou Cohen

Can't wait to hear these, Lou! However, the links are messed up on the
page, they have HTML code embedded in them.

Dave,

The links look fine from here, but others are complaining. From here I
can't tell what's going on. Could you please go to

http://jolc.net/musicsite/improvs.html

and get a dump of the html on that page and send it to me?

...or maybe just refresh the page.

I wonder if there's some intermediate version of the page on certain
servers, and they are slowly being updated to the final version of my
html.

I just got a note from Enrico, who couldn't read the page earlier, but
it's now fine. I haven't touched the page.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

What I'm seeing is that the first part of every tag looks like this
when viewed as source:

so the are line endings breaking up what should be a string with no
whitespace.

The line endings shouldn't be a problem with any browser I've tried it
on: Safari, Opera, Firefox, IE. What you're seeing are just very long
strings of text being passed to a php script. The limit on these
strings is 4093 or something of that sort. If anything's wrong it's
possibly the link following the &mp3= tag somewhere. If after you
refresh the page and it still doesn't work, please dump the whole page
and send it to me. Thanks for your patience!

Hello Lou

After an initial failure of the link, now I can upload mp3's fine.

I would have some questions on the pieces:
• What is the wiimote?
• You can have some more explanation on the functioning of the live (bass
clarinet and wiimote)?

thanks

ENRICO,

I'm glad that you can listen to the mp3s. Today I'm working on
redesigning the site so that it will work with all browsers.

To answer your questions:

The wiimote is a Nintendo game controller. The controller is a
bluetooth device which sends messages regarding the physical
orientation of the wiimote. The wiimote looks like a TV remote control
and can be rotated side-to-side ("roll"), or tilted up and down
("pitch"), or pointed side-to-side ("yaw"). These orientations are
sent as bluetooth messages at a very high rate, and a computer with
built-in bluetooth capability can receive them. In my case they are
received by a utility called OSCulator, which then sends OSC messages
about these positions to my csound csd. Actually the messages arrive
so rapidly that my csd only uses a fraction of the incoming messages.
The csd uses the position data to make sound, much like a csd might
use MIDI data to make sound.

The wiimote also has several buttons which the csd sees as a 1 or a 0
(button pressed or button not pressed.) My csd uses these for many
purposes, including the changing of the type of sound to be produced.
One button is shaped like a trigger, and I sometimes use that to start
a sound when the trigger is pressed, and to stop the sound when the
trigger is released.

Therefore with the wiimote I can play sounds in real time and in
response to other musicians. So in the duos I was making sound in real
time in response to Paul Hoskin, who was playing the contrabass
clarinet. We had never met and never played music together before. I
think you can see that I was able to be very responsive to the
clarinet player. Sometimes it might be hard to tell which is the
clarinet and which is the computer, since the clarinet sounds were as
unconventional as the computer sounds (multiphonics, clicks, etc.)

In the solo, I was again using the wiimote and improvising in real
time. There were no other instruments. But the sound might suggest
that several instruments were playing at once, because my csd was able
to start various processes which continued independently.

I hope this answers your questions.

Enrico,

I'm happy to share my work. Some time ago I uploaded my project for a
student of Dr. Boulanger's. That upload is still available at:

http://www.jolc.net/lcpublic/berklee/

I have updated my csd in minor ways since then but I think the csd
that's there is representative of how it works.

I am currently using this csd with MacCsound, but it might be possible
to use QuteCsound. I haven't tried that in quite awhile.

It is LARGE because it includes several samples that the csd can play.
The csd is rather big also, but if you have difficulty dealing with it
I will be happy to explain the structure. The most important
instruments are:

instr 1 which reads OSC messages related to buttons

instr 3 which reads OSC messages related to the orientation of the
wiimote (and another device called NUNCHK, an optional Nintendo
accessory). I refer to this data as "accels" because the raw data is
acceleration data. However, the wiimote converts that data to
positional data.

instr 900 which invokes and turns off various "patches". Each patch
responds somewhat differently to the wiimote, but you can see that (I
hope) by reading the code.

I hope you enjoy looking at and enjoying the csd.

-Lou

PS: I'm still working on finding a way to make the site more robust. I
don't know when I'll succeed.
