Subject[Csnd] a new GUI "matrix phase mod" instrument, w/oscillator feedback
Hi all,

My small contribution to the world of RT Csound instruments, which of coursed is dwarved by the work of Iain McCurdy. Nevertheless, his code inspired my to try some variations. This one, I find, is a rabbithole of fun if you have a MIDI keyboard.

http://www.akjmusic.com/software/matrix_phase_mod_20110225.csd

In this instrument, I was looking to emulate, on a modest scale, some of the features of the newer generation of FM-instruments where each oscillator can cross modulate any other, including itself, in a matrix-like layout of index values. (e.g. Sytrus) So in effect, there are no fixed "algorithms" of modulation layout...just a continuum of modulation values that allow for n^2 possibilities of 'modulator' and 'carrier' pairs....here, there is a conceptual 'default' FM-carrier, but one could think of this as a convoluted spaghetti where everything is both a modulator and carrier. The feedback is great, because it has the effect of mitigating the bright punch of so much FM sound, and seems to make the spectrum a bit more fat and rounded out. The result is more pleasing to my ears; you get something approaching sawtooth basses, which is nice.

This is a work in progress, but right now, I can say I think it's a very nice instrument---I've already spent hours playing it, and it's a time-sink if you're not careful. :) Great for fat FM basses, clavi-harpsi-chords, organs, atmospheric ambient 'string-like pads', percussive bursts, and strange metallic universes. Whole ambient soundscapes can be composed by holding chords and fiddling with the parameters. Pretty fun. You can even get some really funky synthetic drums happening. I encourage anyone to build on this framework and re-share. I can think of several features to add, and I'm open to taking requests as I slowly improve it.

Possible additional features:
1)  saving patches --- this should be a must, but I want to make sure I'm not wasting my time, b/c last I heard FLsaveSnap and friends were broken?
2) keyboard tracking
3) state variable filters, multiple filters? formant filters!!!?
4) keyboard tracking & an option to adjust velocity sensitivity
5) an LFO and routing matrix for it.
6) a set of standard (or interesting) tunings and temperaments in tables, choosable from the GUI
7) an option to hold the modulator's pitches steady while the 'carrier' only moves--giving a kind of changing formant/changing spectrum instument as you move on the keyboard.

I would love for qutecsound to be more RT-robust (at least in this version on my machine) before I port things over there (I haven't yet recompiled to check that error, Andres :) ) But something like this it would be a LOT easier if I used a GUI builder...adding a feature in hand code and then refiguring the coordinates of widgets is a major PITA....I wonder if there's a way to do a mock layout in FLTK's builder, FLUID, and steal the layout code for Csound's purposes in  the meantime?

This is great. So do you have a custom version that uses midi
controller messages to manipulate the timbre in real time?

No, I don't...my controllers are: a Yamaha digital piano, and an M-Audio Key-Rig 49. The interface is quite simple on them, and I don't have one of those midi-knob gadgets for physical access to parameters....so I'm not motivated personally to do such things...however, feel free to add some code!

By the way, in the FLtext widgets (the ones that have the MOD ratios, etc.), you can right-click on the window to move the parameter in coarse fashion, and left-clicking moves them at a more-fine-grained precision.

This is how it is on Linux anyway. Mac, with their one-click wonder mice design, I think it must be with the Apple mod-key or something.

I'm having a lot of fun with this. My keyboard is at work so I'm using
Steven's virtual MIDI keyboard. I was half expecting the MIDI sliders
to control the sound. Great stuff. This is definitely one for the
collection.

I'd love to try it. Can someone remind me how to do that in QuteCsound? Those
FLTK opcodes don't compile.

Also, according to the manual, FLpanel must be followed, sooner or later, by
FLpanelEnd. That doesn't seem to have been done here. Is the manual wrong?

There is a FLpanel_end in it. It works well here (OSX10.5). Nice sound
out of the box.

Okay, so there's a typo in the manual. And also in the syntax highlighting of
QuteCsound, which doesn't recognize FLpanel_end as a valid opcode when it
has the underscore character in it. (Also the lower-case 'e'.)

I can't resist to port to QuteCsound :)

Hey,

Just a followup--I have a new version out:

http://www.akjmusic.com/software/matrix_phase_mod_20110308.csd

New features are:

* addition of keyboard tracking slope for modulation depth
* addition of velocity sensitivity control for modulation depth
* you can modify the code for GEN2 tuning tables using cpstmid (useful for microtonality---example F-tables embedded in the score section of the .csd file itself)
* you can add a direct mix of modulator oscillators to the end signal now.
* you can control the maximum speed of the stereo-widening "jitter chorus" effect

Enjoy!
