are you using the new generation wiimotes? if so, how do they compare to the old ones? kelly Send bugs reports to the Sourceforge bug tracker https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=81968&atid=564599 Discussions of bugs and features can be posted here To unsubscribe, send email sympa@lists.bath.ac.uk with body "unsubscribe csound" |

Lou, i have been expirementing with a set of wiimotes that have been stuffed into nerf soccer balls. i'm trying to track distances but i've found there is just too much noise in the accelerometers. nintendo came out with an attachment that contains mems tuning fork gyroscopes. its suppose to help stablize the accelerometer readings. i haven't forked out the $20US for them yet. i suspect that they are electonically transparent as there is no hint that any of the games had to be modified, though the wii os could have certianly been. sadly, they make the wiimote too long for the balls im using. but for even more money, i think you can purchase the ones with gyroscopes in the old form factor. just more money though. i'm typically running at a sub-k rate of about 200 reads/sec @ 4 wiimotes. for solo wiimote, i can get about 500/sec. that is using the wiimote opcodes and not osc on linux. the sound cloud pieces are awesome. i wish i had your vision for sonic texture. kelly On Mon, 28 Feb 2011, Louis Cohen wrote: > Kelly, > > I'm using a wiimote and nunchuk that Dr Boulanger gave to me about 2 years > ago. Finally, the duos I played at the Seattle Improvised Music Festival. These are with Paul Hoskin, playing contrabass clarinet. I was using wiimote/MacCsound/laptop. Kelly, I'm using a wiimote and nunchuk that Dr Boulanger gave to me about 2 years ago. There's an ID on the inside that reads: A1FF110 - this might be a model number. I have never so much as held in my hand another wiimote, so I have nothing to compare it with. The wiimote delivers data faster than I can process it, so one of my breakthroughs in developing the csd was to realize that I had to filter the data. Even so, the OSC message buffers sometimes have slightly old data in them that I am not processing fast enough. There are certain aspects of operation that could be improved and I'm curious to know what a new generation wiimote might have that mine doesn't have. For example: the nunchuk joystick sometimes does not sit exactly at its neutral position when I let go of it. Therefore I have to test whether it's "near" the neutral and respond accordingly. Does this answer your question? -Lou On Feb 22, 2011, at 5:07 PM, kelly hirai wrote: > are you using the new generation wiimotes? if so, how do they > compare to the old ones? > kelly > > > Send bugs reports to the Sourceforge bug tracker > https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=81968&atid=564599 > Discussions of bugs and features can be posted here > To unsubscribe, send email sympa@lists.bath.ac.uk with body > "unsubscribe csound" > Send bugs reports to the Sourceforge bug tracker https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=81968&atid=564599 Discussions of bugs and features can be posted here To unsubscribe, send email sympa@lists.bath.ac.uk with body "unsubscribe csound" |

Kelly, You're doing things with wiimotes that go way beyond my wildest ideas. My model for making music with a wiimote is the theremin (one hand controls pitch, the other controls amplitude.) We have a fantastic theremin player here in Boston (James Coleman) and I've played duos with him a number of times. I thought that my hands could be made to express musical ideas much like a theremin player does. The wiimote and csound have potential for much more complex textures than a theremin can handle, but that was my original inspiration. When I have more time, I'll post a demo of how I use the wiimote to make music. Thanks for your kind words about the performances, by the way. best, Lou On Feb 22, 2011, at 8:47 PM, kelly hirai wrote: > Lou, > i have been expirementing with a set of wiimotes that have been > stuffed into nerf soccer balls. i'm trying to track distances but > i've found there is just too much noise in the accelerometers. > nintendo came out with an attachment that contains mems tuning fork > gyroscopes. its suppose to help stablize the accelerometer readings. > i haven't forked out the $20US for them yet. i suspect that they are > electonically transparent as there is no hint that any of the games > had to be modified, though the wii os could have certianly been. > sadly, they make the wiimote too long for the balls im using. but > for even more money, i think you can purchase the ones with > gyroscopes in the old form factor. just more money though. > > i'm typically running at a sub-k rate of about 200 reads/sec @ 4 > wiimotes. for solo wiimote, i can get about 500/sec. that is using > the wiimote opcodes and not osc on linux. > > the sound cloud pieces are awesome. i wish i had your vision for > sonic texture. > > kelly > > On Mon, 28 Feb 2011, Louis Cohen wrote: > >> Kelly, >> >> I'm using a wiimote and nunchuk that Dr Boulanger gave to me about >> 2 years ago. Dr. Cohen - Really glad to be able to check this out. Impressive stuff, and I think we'd all benefit from a demo about how you use the WiiMote (I know how helpful you've been in the past with OSC message help, so I imagine there is a lot more to learn from).
I remember your piece from the Bohlen/Pierce concert, and the concept behind it was very cool. Are these instruments based on a concept as well (not necessarily the Hadron Collider - if I remember correctly - but some sort of other academic instrument design)?
Best, and thanks for sharing. Colman On Mon, Feb 28, 2011 at 9:22 PM, Louis Cohen <loucohen@jolc.net> wrote: Kelly, -- Colman O'Reilly | colmanoreilly@gmail.com | www.colmanoreilly.com

Kelly, that's a neat idea with the nerf soccer balls. I had an identical dream of mounting Wiimote or other accelerometer with wireless transmission inside of balls. I am happy to inform you that the 20 dollars is well spent for the motionplus attachment for Wiimote. I have had nice results with it, and adjusting ranges and filtering the signal with OSCulator or junxion can get some tight results. Lemme know how the ball thing works out please ... Here's a video of new Wiimote in action, pardon the long explanations http://vimeo.com/19941753 John Clements On Feb 22, 2011, at 5:07 PM, kelly hirai |
