Subject[Csnd] Strange MIDI output problem with Csound 6.18
Hi all,

I'm having a strange MIDI output problem with Csound 6.18 on macOS (Apple Silicon).

I am currently moving my system towards Csound 7, but I still need to use Csound 6.18 for some existing projects, so I need to get it working again.

The problem is that Csound sends just one MIDI event when playback starts (Note On, C6, velocity 100). No further MIDI events are received during playback. When I stop Csound, MIDI Monitor suddenly receives a burst of Note Off messages.

I've established that;

Csound 6.18 successfully detects and selects IAC Driver Bus 1 via PortMIDI.

The IAC bus is online.

DAWs can send MIDI through the same IAC bus without any problems, and MIDI Monitor receives all the notes.

The identical problem occurs when running Csound from Terminal, CsoundQt and VS Code.

The problem began after I removed some files in preparation for an update and subsequently reinstalled Csound 6.18.

I'm running Csound 6.18 (double samples), November 6, 2022 build, commit 7b7661e9a902473e30e98983bc2983f74e37f838.

Terminal confirms:

rtmidi: PortMIDI module enabled
PortMIDI: selected output device 0: 'IAC Driver Bus 1' (CoreMIDI)

Does anyone have any idea what might cause Csound to initialise MIDI output successfully but then send no further MIDI events? Could this be a PortMIDI/CoreMIDI issue or a problem with my Csound 6.18 installation?

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

I think my colleague Andreas had a similar midi problem on osx recently.  Something to do with OS security options as far as i recall.

Warning: the comments below may have absolutely nothing to do with your issue. However, on Windows (and also 6.18 I think), I encountered a similar situation.

IIRC, my eventual resolution involved two elements:

In any case, I recall that the problem/solution was on my end (.csd code), and not with Csound. (P.S. This is usually the case for me!)
