Hi Alessandro,
I warmly congratulate too for this new frontend!
After having a quick look of the tool and bridge it to Reaper I'm really agree with Giovanni idea to explore other ways to interact with.
As for the GUI, I think it would be nice to encapsulate by a label all controls by instrument (group all declared chnget-widget for each instrument).
I'm currently working around a time-based program to parse datas in real-time using a UDP protocol (in this case, from the program to Csound via a UDP port). I try it for fun in apeCsound and it's really intersting for me to record the csound audio stream on Reaper in real-time.
Just to get a general idea, could you tell me what is under the Apply button ("press Apply, and the engine recompiles while the track keeps playing. No restarts, no external tools."). Is it an evaluation of the code on the fly, like in the Steven live-coding environment?
I wasn't able to go to Sicily this year, but I sincerely hope I'll have the chance to see you—and everyone else—again in two years!
Many thanks,
JB

Hi Jean Basile, Many thanks for your kind message, and warm greetings! It’s really great to hear from you. Regarding your question about the Apply button: no, Apply is not an on-the-fly evaluation like live coding. It is a complete recompilation: the Csound engine is destroyed and recreated from scratch using the new text. Maybe the name ‘Apply’ in not appropriate! So, what “keeps playing” is the DAW itself, not the sound produced by apeCsound — the apeCsound audio stops for a brief moment while the engine is rebuilt. That said, this could be added. Csound 7 provides csoundCompileOrc on the running engine, so it should be possible to implement an “Apply live” mode that compiles only the <CsInstruments> section in the current engine, without restarting it. That could get much closer to the kind of live-coding interaction you have in mind. And thanks again for your thoughts about the GUI and the UDP/time-based approach — it sounds really interesting, especially the idea of recording the Csound audio stream into Reaper in real time. I’m sorry we missed you in Sicily this year, but I really hope we’ll have the chance to meet again in two years! All the best, and thanks again for writing! Alessandro
