Subject[Csnd] gtihub copilot in vscode writing Csound
Hi,
You may know about this already, but copilot in vscode now writes sensible Csound code. It will even make the Cabbage GUI. Whoa! This speeds up instrument development quite a bit. It even makes sensible dsp suggestions. Just sitting here laughing and drinking coffee while new instruments unfolds in front of my eyes.

Yes Øyvind,

Game Changer.

I plan (if accepted) to present this at LAC. With one of my current CCRMA students at Stanford, a program we have developed that he calls DrC.
It's amazing and is transforming the assignments in my current Csound class. I also have a paper on CStore with another student, who has just been accepted to his master's at Dartmouth College, that we will present at IEEE AI in Granada, Spain.  We will be sharing soon with everyone.

Hi Oeyvind!

Thanks for the report! Which model did you use? (I wonder if Claude is better than Gemini or ChatGPT in that regard).

Hello Csounders,

We are using Claude.  But, in class, I have had success with Gemini (just winging it - making MIDI instruments in front of students).
Back in the day, when I did these initial experiments with John ffitch (on his birthday), with ChatGPT, it was not that good.  I have not tried ChatGPT lately.  I am sure it is much better.

I've just let it auto-select the model so far. The first times I used it some weeks ago, it was using Claude Haiku, I think.
Then I saw it was using GPT 5.3 Codex yesterday. Same now.
As long as it works this well, I'm happy to let it just autoselect.
I've had very little problems with it writing silly code now (the last month). A small snag just now, when I ask it to also make svg element widgets for Cabbage, but hey!, that is already more complex than I can handle comfortably by hand.

Yes, his posts have been contributing to my curiosity in checking this out.
Also, it seems the models have gotten a lot better over the last few months, so now it mostly "just works".
I still think it helps a lot with a good knowledge of how I would do it by hand, as otherwise I don't know how I would be able to guide the model to do it.
So, my conclusion as to how this changes what we need to teach our students is *very little*. They still will need to learn the dsp and the program logic ;-)

Hi,
You may know about this already, but copilot in vscode now writes sensible Csound code. It will even make the Cabbage GUI. Whoa! This speeds up instrument development quite a bit. It even makes sensible dsp suggestions. Just sitting here laughing and drinking coffee while new instruments unfolds in front of my eyes.

It is absolutely changing the way I teach Csound at Berklee. I hope to discuss some of this at LAC (if accepted there) and at NIME (waiting to hear there) and at ICSC (once that gets announced.
I have a feeling that AI and Csound will be a big issue at this year's conference.

SubjectRe: [Csnd] [EXTERNAL] Re: [Csnd] gtihub copilot in vscode writing Csound
Good questions, Joachim.
I think our concept of learning will also change going forward. I'm not sure exactly how (of course). The much used reference to the old Greek (Socrates vs Plato) is useful I think... how the introduction writing things down compared to keeping all the knowledge orally and in the head at all times... obviously one knows something in another way when keeping it all in memory without writing it down, but writing it down increases capacity to such a high degree that we can do much more. Something similar can be thought of this new technology, that *to know* something has gotten another flavor, another mode of knowing. All of these modes of knowing are still valid and useful, and each apply to different contexts and workflows. We just got one more level of abstraction available to us.

i am wondering:
what is learning then?
and what is the communication with the AI?  giving orders?

SubjectRe: [Csnd] [EXTERNAL] Re: [Csnd] gtihub copilot in vscode writing Csound
I am still reflecting on what I teach, how I teach it, what I need to teach, and how I evaluate assignments. A semester ago, I had students follow and redo Rory's excellent videos on making CABBAGE plugins. Now—I wonder. They can ask Claude to create the plugin and then request Claude to explain how it was made and how it works. Asking for reviews and analyses of Claude's code is very helpful and insightful. Claude is a pretty amazing "tutor." But, have my students truly learned how to do things independently, or have they just learned how to get things done? I am learning a lot. When I ask my comp class students to listen to Chowning and Varese and analyze their work, I learn a ton from their (ChatGPT-written) essays. I ask... "Did you at least read this?" It's pretty great. Last semester in class, I showed them the three lines of CABBAGE code needed to support "presets" in a Csound instrument. I guess no one was paying attention, because the following week, all their assignments failed—they were filled with for loops and if-else statements, none of which worked at that time. They had all asked AI to do the assignment, and they all received the same AI mistake. Last week, I finished teaching how to MIDIfy some Csound TOOTS and manual instruments, but they still weren’t remembering to add MIDI envelopes or set ctrlinits. So I said, "Hey Gemini, make me a working Csound MIDI synth with filters, controllers, and a good-sounding global reverb using the freeverb opcode." In less than two minutes, I played the working example for them. Oh no! Oh well. How do I teach with this? What should I assign? How do I grade? And I have many other stories... I’m sure you do, too. Michael Gogins, Victor Lazarini, and Iain McCurdy might be proud of my new Csound web apps, which include buttons, sliders, 18 instruments, interactive particle flocking graphics—all written with Dr. C in one afternoon and evening. It even builds the webpage with versions for laptops and iPhones. Crazy.  (I asked the AI to improve this message before sending.). In the middle of the night, when I am up working around the clock, I now get messages from my Stanford collaborator's "digital twin" (Mateo Larrea) reminding me that I have earned a rest because I have been working so hard and that I should get some sleep."  (He is making a digital twin of me to take over my office hours for me ;-). My website was lost and so, in two days, Claude rebuilt it for me and helped me to deploy it - step by step (http://richardboulanger.com) It is way too long, and way too wordy (like this message) but there are tributes in there to Barry Vercoe, F. Richard Moore, Max Mathews, john ffitch, Victor Lazzarini, and many of my amazing students like Aman Jagwani.  Soon there will be something about Steven Yi, Rory Walsh, Michael Gogins, Joachin Heintz, Iain McCurdy, and many others, too.

SubjectRe: [Csnd] [EXTERNAL] Re: [Csnd] gtihub copilot in vscode writing Csound
Attachments4op-elec-piano.csd
FWIW, I tried the AI guidance in my repo today with a fresh session using Sonnet 4.6 with this prompt:

"Read llms.txt and then generate an instrument that uses 4-op Phase modulation synthesis. Research online to see how they can be configured to make the sound of an electric piano."

Copilot proceeded to search on the web various articles on FM/PM and Electric Piano and replied with what is below for explanation and the attached CSD. I found the results and information interesting (though some generated comments were a little questionable...)

I think there's big questions on using AI and how it can both harm as well as help. (And so many ethical/moral questions, and larger scale political and economic ones too...).

[AI Response]
Now I have enough context to write the instrument. Based on my knowledge of DX7/DX11 electric piano synthesis:

- **4-op algorithm**: Two parallel carrier/modulator pairs (like DX11 Algorithm 1 parallel variant)
- **Pair 1** (attack clang): modulator ratio 14:1 → fast-decaying high PM index → inharmonic "tine" transient
- **Pair 2** (body): modulator ratio 1:1 → slower-decaying index → warm harmonic sustain
- **PM via cosine FM**: DX-style PM is equivalent to FM with a cosine modulator at amplitude `β·fm`

4op-elec-piano.csd created. Here's what's inside and why:

---

### Architecture

**4-op algorithm** — two parallel carrier/modulator stacks (DX11 Algorithm 5 variant):
```
Op2 (ratio 14:1) ──▶ Op1 (ratio 1:1) ──┐
                                         ├──▶ MIX ──▶ OUT
Op4 (ratio  1:1) ──▶ Op3 (ratio 1:1) ──┘
```

### PM Implementation

DX-style phase modulation is equivalent to FM with a **cosine** modulator at amplitude `β·fm`. This is implemented in the `PMPair` UDO using `giCos` (GEN09 sine at 90°):
```csound
aMod = oscili(kModIdx * iModFreq, iModFreq, giCos)
aOut = oscili(1.0, iCarFreq + aMod)
```

### Electric Piano Character

| Layer | Mod ratio | PM index β | Behaviour |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Clang** (Pair 1) | 14:1 | 3.2 → 0 in ~60 ms | Inharmonic partials form the "tine" click |
| **Body** (Pair 2) | 1:1 | 1.8 → 0 over note | Rich harmonic tone mellowing to a clean sine |

- **Velocity** scales `β` so light touches are softer and more sine-like
- **Stereo tremolo** at 5 Hz with 90° L/R phase offset recreates the classic Rhodes tremolo-amp sweep
- **Global plate reverb** via `reverbsc` on a shared bus

Just place it in the root workspace directory and away you go.

SubjectRe: [Csnd] [EXTERNAL] Re: [Csnd] gtihub copilot in vscode writing Csound
Thanks, Steven.  These are nice.  I have added them to my Claude-generated WebApp, which showcases your previous examples. waveform and spectral displays, keyboard, and live MIDI in.  For class this week?  Not sure yet if I want to fully go here with them - maybe?  I am now adding a dozen more of my MIDI models and then possibly some other things - learning synthesis?

```
Op2 (ratio 14:1) ──▶ Op1 (ratio 1:1) ──┐
                                         ├──▶ MIX ──▶ OUT
Op4 (ratio  1:1) ──▶ Op3 (ratio 1:1) ──┘
```

### PM Implementation

DX-style phase modulation is equivalent to FM with a **cosine** modulator at amplitude `β·fm`. This is implemented in the `PMPair` UDO using `giCos` (GEN09 sine at 90°):
```csound
aMod = oscili(kModIdx * iModFreq, iModFreq, giCos)
aOut = oscili(1.0, iCarFreq + aMod)
```

### Electric Piano Character

| Layer | Mod ratio | PM index β | Behaviour |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Clang** (Pair 1) | 14:1 | 3.2 → 0 in ~60 ms | Inharmonic partials form the "tine" click |
| **Body** (Pair 2) | 1:1 | 1.8 → 0 over note | Rich harmonic tone mellowing to a clean sine |

- **Velocity** scales `β` so light touches are softer and more sine-like
- **Stereo tremolo** at 5 Hz with 90° L/R phase offset recreates the classic Rhodes tremolo-amp sweep
- **Global plate reverb** via `reverbsc` on a shared bus
