Someone who knows a tremendous amount about synthesizer history is Jim Aikin. He wrote for the magazine Keyboard in the 1970's and 80's. He met all the luminaries of the pop keyboard scene at the time. He has a blog where he recently posted a seven-part series of his experience working at the magazine:

He's an always interesting writer and might be willing to share some details on the history of the people and instruments that took a few basic ideas and went to the moon and back.
