Subject[Csnd] Interview
Hello,

I’m a radio student from Brussels and am new to your community. I’m doing research about how mathematics influences your music/sound. And how much on a daily basis you have to deal with maths. I'm wondering if it’s possible to interview someone about it online. Or if you know someone from Belgium, I could get in contact with, please let me know.

Thank you very much!

Hello and welcome Jutte,
considering the talent and brains around here, I may not be the best
candidate, but I am willing and have some use for maths. It's definitely a
question of project on how much and what I may need.

Best wishes,

Jeanette

Jutte,

Math is the foundation and is fundamental to music and audio.
It is basis of acoustics of intervals of sound waves and patterns that we
think of as music.

Acoustics, electronics and technology is how we convey the audio
through the devices we use to record and playback the music that
people put together.

"... how much on a daily basis you have to deal with maths?", almost
all day, everyday. Coffee and calculus to wake up the brain in the morning.

Hello Jutte,
in my music math, and particularly number theory is the seed, that flourish in musical configuration. I can show two examples of music realised with Csound, exploring two areas of mathematical forms and formalisation:
1)    Invisibili -vivibili -rappresentazioni di rapporti (2016-2018) for 8-channel fixed media, browsing periodical numbers on various numerical basis, that offer al the material not only to macro events (notes, rhythm, panning), but also the microstructure of waveform that follows the same patterns (long period: low frequency, no period= silence). As the frequency are period-based, the result is a inverse harmonic relationship.

2)   Qui Fibonacci- ovunque (2023) for piano and Csound-programmed keyboard with variable temperament (one performer, notes in italian) explores the relationship between generalised recursions (from the classical of Fibonacci and Lucas, to arbitrary and improvised), their spectra, and compares the similar temperaments, also in recursive fashion: octave in 5,7,12-ready for the acoustical piano, 19, 31, 50 ET.

all best,
Giovanni
