Subject[Csnd] CsoundQt7 alpha including Csound 7
Hi!

I published a pre-release of CsoundQt 7.0.0 on Github, including Csound 7 in the packages for Mac, Windows and Linux AppImage:

There has been a myriad of changes to the code to get it building with Qt 6 and Csound 7, so  there might be hidden issues. Yet, it might be the easiest way to try out Csound 7 at the moment.

Thanks go to Gleb for the new icon and splash screen, Joachim pushing it all going, Andrés for valuable input and thoughts! Now the basis is there, more improvements and developments will follow.

From the users' point if view there has not been so many changes yest (some things like PythonQt and Live Event Sheets are dropped), internally much more. See a summary here: https://github.com/CsoundQt/CsoundQt/blob/csoundqt7/Changes%20to%20CsoundQt7.md

The Windows build was the most problematic but I think got it working somehow. It does not have Virtual MIDI keyboard nor recording support at the moment.
None of the packages contains html support yet but it worked OK on my local Linux build.

Who builds CsoundQt from sources, the main development branch is csoundqt7 https://github.com/CsoundQt/CsoundQt/tree/csoundqt7  Of course there will be also bugfixes for CsoundAt 1.x line (branches devlop and master), if needed.

Please try and report back!

Hi Tarmo!
great work and amazing perspective!
I installed on Win, first test ok, with the minor exception of Virtual keyboard and Table editor. I can’t test Csound7 features, without documentation; I will test some example searching in this list.

Hi Tarmo!

Maybe I'm the only one to ask about this, but do you have the Debugger still in the menu in this
version ? I'm using the old version of CsoundQt ("official" Ubuntu Studio 22.04 version) and
I haven't succeeded to solve how that should be operated in order to get it work.
Better luck in this new version ?

Hi!

Ro be honest, I have never used or built with debugger support myself.
But the option by building is still there and there was plan to try it out. Your message is agood motivation for it.

Hi Giovanni!

Thanks! Yes, there is no QML related functionality (keyboard, table editor) yet in the Windows package. I am sure I will solve it.

But your question about material of Csound 7 syntax -  I am not sure if there actually is much around... I think in the manual there is not a specific Csound 7 part yet: https://csound.com/manual/PrefaceWhatsNew.html

If it helps (and I am not sure if it comes through) -  I attach some shots of Steven's talk in Vienna demonstating the new language features.

But some more documentation would be really welcome at this stage, I guess.
Maybe there is and I missed it too...

we are working on a new (mk-docs based) version of the manual, and here
are at least some starting points for new csound 7 features:
https://joachimheintz.github.io/CS7_Manual/intro-whats-new-in-csound-7/

you could also look into the tests, in particular the ones which are
added recently:
https://github.com/csound/csound/tree/develop/tests/commandline

and victor usually includes very instructive examples in his pull
requests but this requires more search, i think.

Tarmo - this is great.  I downloaded and installed and it is there, but it seems to be still using Csound6.
(( You did say the it "included Csound7 in the package for the Mac - which super excited me! ))
- Perhaps you or a Mac user could tell me what I need to do to get it to run (as my front-end) for Csound7 on a MacBook Pro?

Thanks.

Hi!

Thank you for the report!

Can you try, what About in CsoundQt about Csound version? Should be 7000.
The bundle does not include csound binary, it is just linked against Csound 7 library and things like

signal:a = 0

should work.
Run in Terminal does not work, unless  you have Csound installed in your path, then the installed binary is used.

Thanks!

OK - just downloaded it again.
On the desktop.
Yes - under about CsoundQt is does say it is running Csound7000
(I had been running in the terminal - and there it said it was running my older Csound6)

But wait - I tried adding your "signal:a = 0" to my Toot1 and just ran it - not in terminal - and YES!!!
- it ran, and the console told me that it was running: Csound version 7.0 (double samples) Oct 28 2024

NICE.

Thank you Tarmo

I will continue using this (and start getting my students to work with it too.

Are you talking about a new Csound release, the 7.x? Or it is a new

If there is a new CsoundQt Out, does it have the new accessibility

Many thanks.

SubjectRe: [Csnd] CsoundQt7 alpha including Csound 7
Hi Gabiela,

It is a pre-release of CsoundQt that is built againa3t Csound 7 and based on Qt 6. From the user's point of view there is not much difference yet, except that you can try out Csound 7 there.

What concerns accessibility, it is just the right time to think about what is missing and try to do things better. You opened a ticket and I answered you but I am not sure if you got back to trying out things: See https://github.com/CsoundQt/CsoundQt/issues/414

Richard, for any case - it is still in alfa and crashes sometimes. So it best just for the most adventurous students still  ;)

Thanks!
Tarmo

Hi all.

My apologize if I am in trouble to understand.

Are you talking about a new Csound release, the 7.x? Or it is a new
release of QT? Or both?

If there is a new CsoundQt Out, does it have the new accessibility
feature implemented and where can I get it?

Many thanks.

Gabe.

Grazie Tarmo. I replied on github.

It's a pleasure to talk with you and I hope that all the devs would be
so receptive as you are. I really appreciated your efford on helping
with accessibility. I know that miracles are pretty rare especially when
the basic concept of an app is visual based but, as you could imagine,
just a little bit could made the difference.

If you want me to test something in accessibility, just point me to a
specific tag to download and I'll do my best to test screen reader NVDA
on it.

Have a wonderful day and job.

Gabe.
