Hi Art - One tip that's maybe obvious: You can go to a shell and type 'set' and check your env vars from there, if you are concerned about "what environment variables are being set where". I was able to run on xp with no probs, once I'd verified that my environment was set up correctly. For example - a box opening up saying 'cannot find python24.dll' just sounds like the python 2.4 installer didn't add the correct dir to your %PATH%.
