I have off and on since csound5 began and went > through different audio drivers have had problems with nchnls = 1. Yes, this seems to be the problem. I had no problems with Toot 10 (nchnls = 2). Aplay has no problem playing a mono wav file. Working in stereo is a pretty acceptable work-around. Thanks to all of you for your help!
