In relation to -b and -B and Windows MME drivers, anything smallerthan 1024 or 2048 will cause drop-outs because that particular modeof output can't have any smaller buffers (it sits in front of a mixer thatprevents that).If you are using a GUI, it's most likely this that is setting the devicenumber and you will have to set it there.
