Funnily enough, I believe that a considerable degree of 
"expressiveness" was one of the last, crucial and enduring 
contributions by Csound creator Barry Vercoe. 

In particular, in the  tempest  opcode, and possibly also the 
SHARC instrument partial database.  Where  tempest  can be 
used to track accelerando or retardando for accompaniment.
