Indeed, asking ALSA directly instead of through portaudio helped a lot.

If I try dac:hw:0,0 I get a "cannot set number of channels" error from csound. 
However with just -odac it works fine.



I'll have to test your Windows suggestions too, because this problem is also 
affecting a friend who uses Windows.
