I am beginning to worry about this.  On this machine portaudio just
does not work, while the direct ALSA code does, but this does seem to
be going against the aim for a simpler uniform code base.  It seems
that PortAudio on MacOSX is even less useful, and so I suppose someone
while write a direct CoreAudio driver.  Just seems a shame after all
this work.
