My vote:

Modify the option as Victor suggests, and make --displays=ascii the default.

--displays= could then be added by users to  or 
.csoundrc, if desired.

Frankly, I use -d all the time, and would like to keep the way this flag 
works intact (backward compatibility).

Rationale: my only use for the display flag is to check to see whether my f 
statements are what I want. (I suspect I'm not alone here.)
