I would but I'm new to irc and can't seem to find the right channel.
Last night I spent too long a time in a channel called #csound that
wasn't the place where everyone else was! I'm not on the right server I
think... I will keep at it, if I get to the right place should I see a
history of chat?

Rory - you were in the right place - be we had all gone off to a
private room and we forgot to invite you.

If you have a mac - Colloguy is an excellent irc app. I am new to it
all too - on the mac - and it's a
pretty great and very useful and productive way to communicate and
share ideas and advice.

Good Luck.

Emacs naturally has an IRC mode (erc-mode). I have it customised
  with

(custom-set-variables
 '(erc-nick "jpff")
 '(erc-port 6667)
 '(erc-server "irc.freenode.org"))

Just continuing the thread that emacs is all you need.....

Great! Whilst reading about irc in emacs I cam across quite a 'learning
curves for common editor' diagram which seems pretty accurate:
