I really am embarrassed by this discussion.  Some years ago (2007) we
ran a project that totally solved this problem, but unfortunately was
funded by commercial money.  We needed two flashes of inspiration,
both obvious if you think about it, and a few weeks' work to produce a
demonstrator.  The funders never did anything with it but I think I am
still bound by NDA.  Must ask if I can publish it now.

Hi,

I believe pulseaudio has already solved the sync problem. Have you
tried enabling its remoting functions?
