[Cs-dev] remove soundout?

Subject[Cs-dev] remove soundout?
Perhaps you have read the question in the userlist about soundout(s).
It seems not to work (I didn't check it myself), and as far as I see,
what it shall do is done by fout. So, should it not be removed? Or at
least a hint in the manual for better using fout?

Best -

A hint in the manual. I don't think we can remove opcodes as they might
break existing pieces.

what about creating "deprecated" opcode library that is not included
in the general
release but can be a separate download for the 3 people that need to
run old scores?

that sounds better.

actually i guess all it might really mean is
attaching a label (and warning message)

and moving things around in the manual - like
put all deprecated opcodes on the bottom of the
quickref list or something..

+ add to the documentation, the newer opcode that deprecates it.

One could add a message to the init function of a deprecated opcode
indicating that. Then the incentive to fix will be in the output.

That's a good idea. So long as it's just a warning and doesn't prevent
the instrument from running. As has been suggested already users should
be able to switch off these warnings if they become annoying.

Rory.

Which opcodes should be deprecated?
Suggestions: soundout (use fout), diskin (use diskin2), filter
(unstable), .....

What's wrong with diskin?

SubjectRe: [Cs-dev] remove soundout?
i think diskin is a different case.

diskin2 is really just diskin with extra features.
and shouldn't have ever been a new opcode. in addition, it is -- as
ALL the "version number" named opcodes are --
poorly named because of confusion with
the '3' used for cubic interpolation opcodes.

i think the interface is just the same with extra optional input
paramaters, &
i would suggest to just rename diskin2 to 'diskin' -- which i guess
means
"diskin2" is deprecated (warning message but still works)
a warning message when 'diskin2' name is used (but still function as
before)
if there is concern about efficiency, there might be some easy adds
to the code
to bypass the extra diskin2 features that slow it down.
