It seems that setting csound_->SetMessageCallback(NULL) prior to deleting the csound_ instance, is a very bad idea in Csound version 5.12 (immediate crash), but that it works in 5.13 and later. Should we still avoid using SetMessageCallback(NULL) to remove callbacks or is it OK in general now? I don't think you actually need to do that, unless there is a specific reason in your code to do so.
