| Is there a tag (label) in CVS? If so, you can get a stable version back by
updating from the labeled release. I saw several labels in the csound
module, but I do not know how they relate to the last stable release.
But even if there is not a suitable label, you can still update as of a
certain date, which would almost certainly get back the stable release.
Also, the file release(s) should contain a stable version(s).
People who are making more than minor changes in CVS: Be sure to label the
current release prior to your commits.
I certainly agree that changes should be made in csound5, not csound. But
the labeling business should be done there as well.

I guess the point is to improve it...and share responsibilities.
But there should be a stable version somewhere...:)
I'm pretty excited reading the latest development phases...but I hope
Csound won't become a "permanently beta software".
Please indulge my impatience!

What is the point of a code freeze if the code is being changed? ...
