Subject[Cs-dev] Localisation/Internationalisation
Does anyone object if we remove the old getstring mechanism and
instead only use the GNU gettext version? As far as i can tell the
gettext system is much easier to maintain and we already have two
complete translations (French and Columbian-Spanish) and bits of other
languages.

SubjectRe: [Cs-dev] Localisation/Internationalisation
The getstring mechanism is not really being used on OS 9 either to my
knowledge. But, I wonder if it will still be possible to compile without
gettext (i.e. will it require setting a #define as it does now) ? I have
not tried gettext yet, or even looked for where I can find it ...

On a related note, I modified a large number of messages in the source code
while making improvements to the error reporting, particularly in the score
parser. I assume that something will need to be done to bring the new
translations into line with the changes, but I do not know what. I will
provide a list of the changed messages later today.

If you set the Str macro to do nothing then it will not call
getstring. I suspect we need to provide some optional compilation in
Top/getstring.c
  Will look at it again.

I think that you added this test to getstring.c:

#ifdef GNU_GETTEXT

I was just wondering if it would remain or not?

Here are the messages that I added/changed/removed since version 5.07. In
some cases, the number of formatting specifiers (%d, etc) in a string has
changed, so it might be rather important to rectify these differences in the
translations.

new strings:

"no value for --csd-line-nums"
"Syntax check completed.\n"
"More than %d arguments in "
"Invalid arguments in : %s"
"Missing end tag "
"Missing end tag "
"Missing end tag "
"Missing end tag "
"Missing end tag "
"Missing end tag "
"Missing end tag "
"This CSD file requires a version of Csound before %d.%02d"
"This CSD file requires a version of Csound after %d.%02d"
"Missing end tag "
"Missing end tag "
"Could not find tag in CSD file.\n"
"sread: " (this one probably should not be translated)
"Internal error in print_input_backtrace()"
" included from line %d of macro %s%s"
" in line %d of macro %s%s"
" included from line %d of file input %s%s"
" called from line %d of file input %s%s"
"missing operand before closing bracket in []"
"Loops are nested too deeply"
"{: invalid repeat count"
"ignoring '%s' in '%c' event"
"! invalid in p1, p2, or p3"
"illegal character after !: '%c'"

changed strings: (Each pair is an old string and its replacement)

"Decode failed....stopping"
"Reading CSD failed ... stopping"

"unknown command: %s\n"
"unknown CSD tag: %s\n"

" on line %d position %d"
" section %d: at position %d%s"

"called from line %d of macro %s"
" called from line %d of macro %s%s"

"in line %d of file input %s"
" in line %d of file input %s%s"

"Number not allowed in context []"
"illegal placement of number in [] expression"

"Random not in context []"
"illegal placement of operator ~ in [] expression"

"Upper not in context []"
"illegal placement of operator @ or @@ in [] expression"

"Operator %c not allowed in context []"
"illegal placement of operator %c in [] expression"

"Open bracket not allowed in context []"
"illegal placement of '(' in [] expression"

"Closing bracket not allowed in context []"
"missing operand before ')' in [] expression"

"read %c(%.2x)\n"
"illegal character %c(%.2x) in [] expression"

"LOOP not at top level; ignored\n"
"Loop cannot start inside of a macro"

"Repeat not at top level; ignored\n"
"Repeat cannot start inside of a macro (ignored)"

"sread: r: invalid repeat count"
"r: invalid repeat count"

"illegal space following %s, zero substituted"

"sread: illegal use of carry, sect %d line %d, 0 substituted\n"
"sread: illegal use of carry, 0 substituted\n"

"Cannot open #include'd file %s\n"
"Cannot open #include'd file %s"

"sread: illegal opcode %c, sect %d line %d\n"

P.S. If someone can make some suggestions to me on how to change the .po
files, I could do this ...

(like where to add new strings? and should their translations just be ""
initially? and when replacing a string with a significantly different one,
should I try to keep the old translation or replace that with "" too? ...)

Anywhere after the header. Yes null translations are ""
There are tools to maintain these files (msgattrib, msgcmp, msgconv,
msgexec, msgfmt, msginit, msgunfmt, msgcomm, msgen, msgfilter,
msggrep, msgmerge, msguniq) If the text is different the translation
shoudl be removed.

Thanks for the info -- I will see what I can do. (I don't have the gettext
tools, so I will have to try the manual route ...)

Yes, you need a special option:

Thanks very much -- hope that it was not too much trouble. I will
investigate getting those tools installed on my OS X machine for the next
time that I need to update messages as it clearly will make the process
easier. (If your script would be useful to anyone else working on Csound,
maybe it should go in CVS?)

Thanks again.
