Well, thanks for taking a look at this issue yourself. This is something we 
should never take for granted, and should re-visit periodically. After all, 
the only reason to have a computer at all is that it is fast, so the faster, 
the better. If a program basically isn't running nearly as fast as possible, 
the programmers are not on the job.

Apologies if I seemed to tread on your toes.  I had a rail trip to
London and spent the time on the train looking at valgrind output.
And then again on the way back -- got about 0.5% improvement in each
direction.

OT...the trip was to the opera, to see The Minotaur (third performance
at Royal Opera House), Harry Birtwistle's new work.  14 killings and
one rape on stage, but a great experience.  Still trying to digest it
all.  But then I love opera.

You and your operas! I've just ordered Berg's Wozzeck on DVD. I've never
seen it and can't imagine that it's going to be staged in Ireland any time
soon. Looks like it's DVDs all the way for any 20th century operas.
