It looks like it sits on top of the different operating system
APIs. But it also provides Audio and MIDI IO classes,
so you can farm out the IO off Csound and not depend
on the portmidi, portaudio, etc modules. Might be handy
also for plugins.

I think I prefer to use whatever Csound uses for IO. In my frontends I
like Csound to do most of the donkey work, simply because it seems to do
it so well.
