SubjectRe: [Cs-dev] csound 5 on linux distributions
I just installed all multimedia apps for Ubuntu 6.10. Csound 4.23 was installed and Csound 5 was not available in the apt-get repositories.

The audio setup on Ubuntu 6.10 is not ideal for Csound. Everything worked including USB audio through my Ozone on my Qosmio notebook, however, all the configuration is for playing CDs and ogg vorbis files. There is an "Ubuntu studio" project but it seems to be in low gear and at the talking stage only.

At the very least I will have to monkey with ALSA and jackd to get audio working right for studio applications, I may also have to rebuild the kernel.

In every other respect, Ubuntu has been my best operating system experience to date by far. That goes for Windows, Mac, Unix, and Linux -- best operating system experience to date by far. No installer glitches, everything works (caveat audio), everything seems to run faster than it used to, the apt-get respository is incredibly useful, and things are easy to manage and configure.

More to the point, the multimedia distros such as DeMuDi and the one from CCRMA do not yet feature Csound 5.

I would think we should start with a music-making oriented "live CD" distro such as dyne:bolic (actually research to find the best distro for Csound would be advisable). After that, Ubuntu, which is increasingly popular.

Bottom line: we don't understand how distros pick up these things. But I think it would help to have an apt package in the files page on SourceForge.

Regards,
Mike

Hi Michael,

The closest there is currently is:

http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/extras/development/SRPMS/repodata/repoview/csound-0-5.03.0-9.fc7.html

Which is a src package which presumably should build very easily for FC
7 (which is to be released on april).

I remember Iain Duncan was planning to include csound5 on pure:dyne, but
he has slipped out of the radar. (people still keep calling Iain
McCurdy, Iain Duncan... =) )

I agree it would be great to get csound into official repositories.

Cheers,
Andrés

I had the same feeling, although if (K)ubuntu is not Linux,
(ok, GNU/Linux) then I'm not sure what it is. I went for
building a custom kernel. It took me quite a while to get
one to boot. They have this weird system where you apt-get
some complex package from within the source tree, and end up
with two more .deb packages in /usr/src, which you install from
there, that handle the grub conf and installation of the image,
and making the initrd and so forth.

Anyway, I wanted to hard code ALSA into the kernel, and the jackd
quick install calls for editing two lines in an include file
in the Linux source, so I wanted to do that. In the end,
everything was comfortable and solid with regard to audio.

Catching up on old messages here! I did try to get csound5 into
pure:dyne, but when I was working on it, I hit way too many undocumented
snags on the pure:dyne end. They were keen to hit release dates and
finally I had to say that I was not able to commit to release dates when
the process did not work according to the docs. It would probably be
worth trying that again, I imagine Pure:Dyne has come aways by now.

There is also the Ubuntu Studio project, that might be a good one. I
agree with the comments on Ubunutu, I use it for desktop now but it is
currently not very nice for setting up low latency audio. Too much audio
integration with the Gnome desktop and not very easy to rip it out at
all!

Iain
